You can donate the unwanted fabric to a quilting club that makes quilts for charity. The fabric that is unsuitable for quilting can be donated to a home economics department. There may be a local society associated with a homeless shelter that has sewing facilities. If all else fails, try giving it away on Freecycle. Good luck with the purge.

  • I’m making another upcycled playtime tunic. I’ve used an old tshirt for the bodice and sleeves and a piece of yardage for the skirt.

  • Shoot. Another brick wall. The store emailed to tell it was out of stock. :/ Anyone else has seen it at their online purveyors?!

  • I’m working on the carousel dress, and I’m so pleased with my French seams (which are still new to me). Can I do the same to attach the sleeves? The fabric is lightweight, and I’ve read on the O&S French seam tutorial that gentle curves will work as well, but I’m still nervous about it. Any advice would be welcome! Thanks!

  • Karen, that’s what we were doing, making swords for the school musical πŸ™‚ All the kids made very safe theatrical swords and mine was the dangerous one! It had sharp sides and a pointy point which will have to be shaved off before it can be used πŸ™‚

Thanks @KAREN. The children have two weeks off. It is the break between first and second semesters.

@Heidi woodwork is great fun isn’t it. I did a weekly help in the woodwork room with Imogen’s class for a good few years running. Of course they were only in there for half the school year. But it became something I really looked forward to. Our…[Read more]

Karen is right, you cut two backs from your main fabric and two from your lining.

Thank you for the explanation, Justsewit. I am sure it will be a wonderful experience for all the children. Enjoy the end of term break! How long are the children out of school?

Heidi, your day sounds like fun. My son spent quite a bit of his last few weeks of high school making wooden swords and shields for a theatrical production.

  • Thank you! I purchased a couple of the discontinued paper patterns, too! One of them was the Ice Cream dress in the next size range I needed. Yippee!

  • Hi! I am not at home at the moment and cannot access that pattern but I checked pictures on my blog of the dress I made a couple of years ago and it looks like you do indeed cut two of the back main fabric and two of the lining fabric because I think that there is a seam up the back of the dress. The front is cut on the fold but not the back. I…[Read more]
