Karen, that’s what we were doing, making swords for the school musical π All the kids made very safe theatrical swords and mine was the dangerous one! It had sharp sides and a pointy point which will have to be shaved off before it can be used π

Thanks @KAREN. The children have two weeks off. It is the break between first and second semesters.
@Heidi woodwork is great fun isn’t it. I did a weekly help in the woodwork room with Imogen’s class for a good few years running. Of course they were only in there for half the school year. But it became something I really looked forward to. Our…[Read more]

@coastmamaienne
Karen is right, you cut two backs from your main fabric and two from your lining.

Thank you for the explanation, Justsewit. I am sure it will be a wonderful experience for all the children. Enjoy the end of term break! How long are the children out of school?
Heidi, your day sounds like fun. My son spent quite a bit of his last few weeks of high school making wooden swords and shields for a theatrical production.

Thank you! I purchased a couple of the discontinued paper patterns, too! One of them was the Ice Cream dress in the next size range I needed. Yippee!

Hi! I am not at home at the moment and cannot access that pattern but I checked pictures on my blog of the dress I made a couple of years ago and it looks like you do indeed cut two of the back main fabric and two of the lining fabric because I think that there is a seam up the back of the dress. The front is cut on the fold but not the back. I…[Read more]

Thanks! Unfortunately the link didn’t work but I have the idea. π
I decided to underline the entire dress in the same thin cotton as the lining. I also decided to leave the belt and collar just out of the solid to add a bit more interest to the dress. I also found an older post on here about finishing the sleeve/armhole edge and have decided to…[Read more]

Hi!
I’m preparing to cut the fabric for my first “Roller Skate Dress”. However, I’m already confused. On the pattern piece it says to cut TWO?? of the lining and the back dress piece? I’m reading that incorrectly, right?
I should only need to cut …
– 1 Front
– 1 Front Lining
– 1 Back
– 1 Back Lining -

Amanda started the topic Putting piping on the center skirt panel in the forum oliver + s: tea party 10 years ago
I have a question about the instructions for putting the bias tape on the center skirt panel. In step #1 of that section, it says to baste the bias tape onto the sides of the center skirt panel. I assume with 1/2 inch SA because it doesn’t mention otherwise.
Then, in step 2, it says to machine- or hand-baste the piping in place using a 3/8 inch…[Read more]

What do you do w/ your unwanted fabric?
I’m in the process of cleaning and consolidating my sewing room. It had kinda got out of hand (again). Over the years, I’ve been given plenty of fabrics, but most of it isn’t suitable for my needs. I also have plenty of larger scraps but the cuts aren’t nearly enough to make a garment. I don’t have any…[Read more]
