My twelve year old went off on her school trip to Ningaloo today. We had to get her to school by 5.45am to leave by 6am. That meant getting out of bed by 4.30! I was up anyway, feeding the baby. She was excited but nervous and I have to admit I had a bit of a cry when she left in the car with my husband to go to school. It is the first time she…[Read more]

Welcome Erysiphe! I love that you have told us about what you do. There are many of us who happen to be green thumbs so they may want to ask your advice on a few things. Some of us grow plants of the cropping kind (my husband is a dab hand) and with that comes soraying and all sorts. We are actually researching how to get the soil in a healthier…[Read more]

Lol! Perhaps we just ditch the powdery mildew and have the Greek muse of sewing. Although I would feel a bit pretentious be named after a Greek muse, lol. 🙂

@erysiphe well that’s maybe slightly better than what I was immediately reminded of: Swine Erysipelas. Disease of pigs caused by Erysipelothrix bacterium.
Perhaps we can invent the Greek muse of sewing AND powdery mildew and call her Erysiphe.

Lol, well it’s a bit nerdy, but more so of the science kind rather than the sewing kind…;) I got a master’s degree in plant pathology and Erysiphe is the genus of the fungi that causes powdery mildew in plants. Not glamorous, but I do like the name. 😉

Personally I always go with the chest measurement to determine a size. That measurement determines fit not only across the chest but also across the back and the armscye (armhole for sleeveless or sleeve size). In the case of Jamie if you go with the waist size it measures a 1X which is 2 sizes larger than her chest size, which is a size L. You…[Read more]

It turns out I only needed to make three pairs of shorts for camp. The third of which were finished this afternoon! She’s all packed ready to leave at sparrows!

Doing a little bit more on the denim quilt and sorting all the fabric/scraps my friend gave me. It’s interesting sorting someone else’s fabric cast offs. Lots of red and green and no purple 🙂

I have to sew a dress for a tween, going into 7th grade, to wear to a wedding. She chose the Sis Boom Jamie dress pattern it’s here in the Oliver & S shop. I met her yesterday and took her measurements chest 38, waist 38 and hips 42. She’s about 5’3″. It has a fitted waist so I thought it would draw the eye in to look like she has a waist instead…[Read more]

Welcome aboard! O+S patterns are definitely an addiction. What does your username mean? I thought it might have been one of the nine muses but I don’t recall there being a muse of cute sewing 🙂

I think it’s ok to link to public photos, we do that in the thread for pointing out great sewing we’ve recently seen. What a completely sweet little detail! Maggie always has the best ideas.

Haha Stupid stuff part two… Making a butterfly skirt.
Sewing in the am, as opposed to the evening. Thinking I wish I could sew during the day because I make less mistakes because I am not tired.
Using this LOVELY black dotted Kaufmann rayon cotton blend chambray. Frays often. So I decide to do french seams.
Would have helped if I put…[Read more]

I am not sure the protocol on linking other’s Flickr photos, so admin can remove if it isn’t okay. She gives a description here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/magonomics/15347834474/in/photolist-7uM4MS-fPh3gD-fF7ccm-pamHD9-fKGzXQ-t3o9z5-poeEtL

That’s really interesting to know, Sarvi – you are very inventive with fabric combinations.
