@mmollett here’s a link to a blog post right here on Oliver + S where I’ve shown how to do a placket just like that one.

Oh yes! That would be an idea.

Another discussion thread has just got me thinking that a pattern hack challenge could be fun. It could be as simple as adding pickets right through to merging designs together and drafting entirely new pattern pieces.
I’m a rule and instruction follower by nature so that kind of challenge would definitely stretch me in a good way! 🙂

Maybe the playtime tunic/dress pattern could work here too? The back yoke would need to be changed to be one piece and the front pieces adjusted to include the placket. And some fullness added to the sleeves to get the gathered effect.
The playtime pattern works great with knits too if you were thinking of making the dress in a knit instead of a…[Read more]

Do you especially want to include a placket, either for looks or ease of dressing? Because otherwise that looks not unlike a Class Picnic top (possibly available on clearance!) with a bit of elastic gathering at the wrist end of the sleeve.

Oh! Of course — my reading comprehension is not so hot before my morning coffee kicks in! 6″ should be plenty and nana can always trim if needed.

Thanks for being up late! I have been “you tubing” how to add a placket. I do own the lullaby layette pattern. My daughter has a 20.5″ chest (I think I remember that correctly). Not sure if she would fit into the sizing but I will have a look. I may be in over my head but looking at the placket instructions in the layette set is properly a great…[Read more]

Hi @mmollett what a lovely dress! I can see why you are so inspired by it.
Do you own the Lullaby layette pattern at all? And more importantly is the little one you are sewing for wearing a size 24months or smaller? I can see a happy and very close adaptation of the linked dress using the top of this pattern and that is why I asked.
The sleeves…[Read more]

I am a relative novice and I am terrible at looking at the patterns to create a “hack”. I fell in love with this tea collection dress…anyone know which O+S pattern could become this? (Specifically concerned about how to make a placket in the skirt…[Read more]

We, as a family, are going to be characters from Big Hero 6. P will be Honey Lemon, my son, Zach will be Hiro, hubby will be BayMax and somehow it got voted that I be Go Go Tomago. I bought a black unitard (and some extra spanx to wear under it). I bought some red F.O.E. To add the red detail onto the costume, I’m just not sure what the best way…[Read more]

Thank you Sarvi; I realise some very poor punctuation/sentence construction does infer that ‘nana’s size’ is relevant. Of course, it’s not! The child is size 8, and lives interstate so it will be her grandmother who will be securing the fit of the elastic on the child. I’ve decided to cut a 6″ piece, and feel reasonably confident that should be…[Read more]

No, you’re correct. The top has side splits and the back hem is lower than the front hem. It’s a nice feature.
Enjoy your sewing. -

I’ve downloaded and printed this pattern. Is the back about 1″ longer than the front? Or have I made a mistake?
