Making this dress for an 8 year old whose chest measurement is just 22 1/2 inches. How much ease is there in the pattern. I thought I would make the size 6 and reduce the pattern at the side seams and center back. Any advice on sizing would be appreciated!

I’m making a junior bridesmaid dress out of a silk/cotton batiste. It has a tight weave you would expect from a batiste but is thin and slightly sheer. I’m planning to self line it and underline my bodice pieces with this German interfacing.…[Read more]

Sorry for the silence! Yes, the hem for both views is the same allowance. Like Lightning says, it’s a short boxy style. It looks darling on her! It also depends on what you’re wearing with it. The cropped length looks great with the culottes, but it might be on the short side for other styles. It’s all about the silhouette, right?

Yes my daughter wears her pants below her tummy I thought it was because she had abdominal surgery last summer but perhaps it’s just a preference thing now that you say that! We may just layer it with a tank.
Thanks so much! -

The t-shirt is a boxy, cropped style. It’s very stylish especially when teamed with the culottes. But not, I found, on a little girl who insisted on wearing her skirts or pants with the front waistband pulled down below a toddler belly. Ugh.
I’m not sure about the hem length without getting the pattern out, but imagine it would be the same for…[Read more] -

Two questions:
1) Is there a hem allowance for view B? I seem to have overlooked them in the instructions (is it just the same as for View A)2) Currently, the shirt seems short. She is at the upper end of the 4 so admittedly I didn’t want to buy the next size up right now but in general does this run somewhat a “crop” length? Thanks!

Hey Diane, I’d suggest lining with lawn. Kaufman makes a nice line of solid lawns that would be a great lining. I’m not sure you’d need to underline the dress, especially if you’re going to include the tulle, which will give the skirt more body for sure. Does that help?

Hi,
I am making my friend’s daughter’s matching fairy tale dresses (view B) to wear to their brother’s first communion. My friend picked out a beautiful Liberty Tawna Lawn fabric. I am thinking of underling the dress as well as lining it to give it a little more body. Any advice would be appreciated, I have only underlined fabric before when I…[Read more]

Hello there Heidi😄
Thanks for the reply. Yes I think they might’ve felt a little overdressed last year judging from the comments in the newsletter. We didn’t purposefully go looking for dresses over the summer holidays but as we were walking through Myer she made the comment of “I like that one!” To a black and red fit and flare on the mannequin.…[Read more]

A fit and flare dress is silk would beautiful and appropriate for the situation. If you already have a pattern she likes (and optimistically fits) that is quite casual making it out of silk will bring a simple design into appropriate for 14 year old “cocktail” style.
I suspect the “cocktail” specification is to prevent some girls turning up in…[Read more] -

Hi
It’s been a while.
My 14 year old daughter is weeks away from her first dressy event. She and her cohort of boarders will be going on a dinner cruise in about three weeks. It will be her first sort of “dance party” type event and she needs a dress.
The dress code is “cocktail” style but it’s been specified that it has to be pretty but not…[Read more]
