Just checking in, it’s been a while! Blame the holidays.
You have all been so busy! I have been sewing but it has been a run of school uniform, which I am always enthusiastic to start but by the time I am doing my last buttonholes, I am flagging!
I’ve still got to photograph everything, but I have done Lunchbox Culottes, Music Class Blouse,…[Read more] -

I haven’t sewn much of anything all summer so I decided to ease into it with a simple project of a Field Trip tee for Picture Day on Monday. I used a soft knit fabric with chocolate biscuits on it and she didn’t want to take it off after the first try-on. I had to convince her that knits need hemming too.
I also need to trace the size 10 Field…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 10 years agoThanks for the encouragement, I took the plunge and ordered! I should have fabric by next week, exciting!
Nicole, I have seen some of the projects you have made with the reversed nap, it does look beautiful! Thanks for reminding me!
I will update with my progress on the jacket. I haven’t been too productive with my sewing lately what with my…[Read more]

I love the Kaufman London Calling line, it’s a pleasure to sew. I vote for the Butterfly set as I recall the Music Class being not the world’s quickest sew. You know your own sewing though, if you’re familiar with it and feel confident, I’m sure you’ll get loads of use from the blouse, in particular, well after the recital. I’d go for a darker…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 10 years agoI am also considering using a corduroy for the exterior and a satin lining. Given that it’s my first time making this pattern as well as the first time making grown up clothes it might be best to keep it simple and not have to worry too much about pattern matching. It wouldn’t be a winter coat with these fabrics but would be okay for the shoulder…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 10 years agoThank you Nicole for your advice! No need to feel mean, it would be terrible to pay all that money just to end up with something unusable! I’m excited to take a look at eBay, I had never thought to look there for fabric. You linked to some really cute ones! 🙂

Sewing for Yourself 10 years agoHello! Not sure if I’m posting in the correct place but I’ll give this a whirl! (Update, I appear to be posting in the correct space now after an initial error). I would like to make the Caramel Jacket by Waffle patterns for myself. Will a fabric that is 9.2 oz per square yard be too heavy? It is described as upholstery fabric so I’m think…[Read more]

Yes… Butterfly. So quick and easy, so elegant. Do it in a fancy pants silk!

Congratulations Nicole; you are a marvel about working with challenging fabrics, and so I’m extra glad for you that Zara is so very happy. Star War boxer shorts – the mind boggles, T!
I got some marvellous feedback re. the shorts, and shirt I finished to fitting point, last week. The grey/cream sketchbook shorts came back today, and I’ve…[Read more]

I second the butterfly skirt! It’s an awesomely easy pattern to make up, and works really well with ‘tricky’ fabrics – ie ones where you don’t want to break up the fabric’s pattern with seams in the front or with corduroy/velvet fabric where seams can look lumpy – that’s my only quarrel with the Music Class skirt. The London Calling fabric is…[Read more]

Garden Party dress? It would look amazing with a sheer overlay. Just cut the pieces twice and sew them as one.

That’s a really pretty fabric! I too would be attracted to the idea of a blouse named after the occasion so I can totally understand the allure of the music class blouse.
What about a purple shot silk butterfly skirt? It would be good for rejuvenating your mojo because sewing with silk makes it special, it comes together REALLY quickly and you…[Read more]

I have got a book recently that I’m really enjoying so I thought I’d share it, it’s called Fabric Manipulation by Ruth Singer. It’s lots of techniques for doing slightly different and interesting things with fabric. While it wouldn’t help you with sewing a garment, it would give you great ideas for embellishing it.
