It’s possible that seam allowance had something to do with the fit. I did shoot for 1/4″ but I use a stretch stitch on my machine and it’s hard to be exact with it because the stitch itself is 1/16″ wide. Alas, the parachute pants do not fit my 10yo son. They’re just too narrow for a comfortable fit, though the length is more or less right. I tightened up the elastic and will hem the cuffs to fit my 8yo daughter, who is pleased. I’ve cut out the 12yo size to try again for my son (glad I have extra fabric)…but I have to say I’m a little…[Read more]

My 10yo needs pants, so I started sewing up a pair of parachute sweatpants this evening. The side stripe is such a nice feature! I didn’t check for fit, but if they’re small my daughter can wear them eventually. I plan to leave out the elastic around the ankles because he prefers sporty pants (like track pants) that aren’t tight at the bottom. The…[Read more]

This week I finished a Sailboat Top in fancy schmancy satin for my daughter. She requested something nice for a piano recital next month (and she doesn’t wear dresses or skirts!)

Thanks for the comment on the seater! My daughter asked for a new sweater for Christmas last year so I had her choose the pattern and colors. That’s the way you get your kids to wear what you make.

Nicole, thanks for that link! I will definitely try that trick with the collar next time.
I did the yoke a bit differently, according to this tutorial from Grainline (http://grainlinestudio.com/2013/04/04/archer-sew-along-day-7-attaching-the-yoke-method-1/) and it worked well for me.

The pattern would definitely benefit from a note about how to lengthen for older kids. I had my son try the shirt on again this morning and the whole thing actually fits very well except for length, so I’ve decided I don’t need to retrace the pattern (whew), just add a good 3″ to the front and back. The chest fits fine, but the neck looks a little tight. He wouldn’t button it up all the way. It’s the length that is so far off. I think for the next one I’ll cut a size 12 and make it 3″ longer like Mama_Knowles suggested. I think if this pattern is ever edited and re-released they should seriously consider making it longer for the bigger sizes.…[Read more]

I know this thread is a year old, but I’m jumping in to say that I had the exact same problem. My 9yo son is average height and weight. When I went with the measurements listed on the pattern envelope it appeared he would wear a size 8. I knew that couldn’t be right, so I cut the size 10 and even made it longer (size 12 length) and it barely fits.…[Read more]
