Hello friends!

Will you be joining us for our Saint-Germain Wrap Dress sew-along? It starts in just over a week, and I’m hoping to have enough time to join you because I have the perfect fabric for another! I’ll show you soon, if all goes well.

In the meantime, I have spring pattern covers to sew and contests to judge, so I’ll keep this short!

My favorite jeans are in need of some sashiko repairs, so I’ve got hand stitching on the mind this week. There are quite pretty.

Speaking of hand stitching, wouldn’t it be fun to add some to the bottom of a Bento Tee? Although with my personal minimalist tendencies I’m still quite partial to the simplicity of those pockets without any additional embellishments.

Speaking of hand stitches, aren’t these delicate additions pretty? I keep envisioning bugle beads along that trouser seam.

Do you love culottes on little girls as much as I do? These two are darling and could be easily replicated using our Lunch Box pattern. Maybe add a Butterfly Blouse for a similar silhouette, below left? I especially like the two scales of gingham, below right!

And on the subject of jeans, I’d like to try altering our Hollywood Trousers a bit for a more dressed-up jean similar to this one on Victoria Beckham. Also loving the winter white trousers, which has been on my sewing wish list for a long time now. I still haven’t found the fabric for it.

Weekend Reading

  • Say what you want about the difference between craft and art and where fashion fits into the mix, but to me Iris van Herpen’s work is clearly art. The way these clothes move is astonishing! Watch the whole video when you get a few minutes; it’s not long. If I was an actor walking the red carpet I would want one of these stunning dresses, but which one would I choose?
  • I sat up when I read this because it’s such a great way to look at clothing: “I have to be super-simple because that’s who I am. No prints, because you get bored and then you want to buy more, and I try to wear exclusively nonsynthetic materials because of all the micro plastics, unless it’s second hand, and clothes that are only made of one fabric.”
  • Did you know that everyone’s favorite orange-handled sewing shears company also has a new fashion line?
  • When mindfulness becomes a way of life. Goals.
  • What an extremely cool job!
  • I’ve thought about this a lot over the past 13ish years that we’ve been in business. Can the sewing industry save our fabric stores?
  • The history of blue.
  • Sad I’ll be missing this: if you go, tell me!

What are you sewing this weekend? Be sure to come back next week because we’ll have a special tutorial for you. Have a great weekend!

Thank you so much for the suggestion to watch the Iris van Herpen video… Holy cow! Absolutely amazing dresses. I declared one my favorite, then another one, and then another…

Agreed re Iris van Herpen. I hope in a future collection she will imagine some of these amazing shapes on varying types of bodies. Also, thanks for these posts.
