Now that’s another one I want to try for my non denim loving (because it is apparently itchy) teen.

It’s really good to hear that we will get to sink our sewing teeth into something with a bit of bite to it. I can see how you’d be frustrated by people wanting simple minimal pattern piece designs Liesl. If they wanted that then really it would be a no pattern piece situation and just make a sarong or something – or do what my daughter does and…[Read more]

Liesl, are you referring to Jalie’s new (last year) Eleonore jean, shttps://jalie.com/jalie3461-eleonore-pull-on-jeans ?
It has been extremely popular over on patternreview,http://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/73380 , already over 40 reviews! -

Ha ha ha!! Mystery solved! I have been stumped: I keep ending up with a good 1 3/4 yards left over, so I finally started to search the forums. Thanks for the great explanation, Todd! I had no idea the fabric I was buying was 58″. It never occurred to me to look; I just assumed I would have to go out of my way to buy wide fabric. But my extra…[Read more]

That’s a shame, I am to the point where I want and crave a nice, detailed and technical sew. I long for a four scissor pattern. The simple ones do get made, and they are wardrobe staples, but I fear I am going to get bored and it won’t be fun or a challenge any more.

I can’t even imagine the complaints we would get about the number of pattern pieces if we had lined it! People are very intimidated by a large number of pattern pieces. Never mind that it sews up quickly, it’s the number of pattern pieces. And that goes for the Lisette patterns too. If it has a lot of pieces people won’t buy it. Sometimes I get a…[Read more]

By the way, it really isn’t hard to rub off a pair of jeans that fit you well and alter the pattern to fit you even better. I should do a video tutorial for that one of these days!

I like Cone denim. And I LOVE the Japanese denim, but you never see that available as yardage. Sadly. But here’s a source for Cone that I contemplate every once in a while. I’d go for the 12.5 oz rigid. But that’s just me. And my relatively powerful sewing machine.

Thanks, Liesl – makes sense.
Aaand now I’ve fallen down a rabbit hole of denim fabric sources in the US, the difference between US and Japanese denim, the renaissance of American denim – who knew? Apparently Cone Mills is used by some high-end producers, but others feel their denim is boring. I might have to buy a yard or two on ebay and see what…[Read more]

Sadly, Mood’s denim isn’t usually up to snuff. But like I said, I’m a really picky customer. I don’t buy jeans very often, and when I do I expect them to last for a really long time. I wear them until they’re more holes than denim. But I do have trouble finding a good fit, so I’d be willing to sew them if I could find the right denim (and time!).

@Liesl – have you ever looked at Mood’s denims (they have a physical store in NYC, right)? If so, are they not a good source for the quality you’re looking for?
(full disclosure – I have no idea what high-end denim feels like. I buy inexpensive jeans because I’m hard on them. Still want them to fit better, though!)

Yes, @motherof5, yes regarding lining the Secret Agent trench!
I own the pattern and have never made it – and I admit it’s because I prefer a lined jacket. I worry that my version would end up too bathrobe-like and not be worn.
Could you link to your blog post about lining it and I’ll check it out…please!

Good idea! I think I will try the pockets. Either using the woven for the pocket or just for a border/binding on a knit pocket.
