Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoNot for me I’m afraid. I really haven’t (deliberately) shown my bra straps since my early 20s, and I don’t intend to! Yes for evening and sports wear but I have no need for evening wear.

Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoAround this neck of the woods..teen girls show straps and most moms don’t, so I guess it depends on the target for this pattern? I prefer shirts that I don’t have to find/wear a “special bra” with. But if it had a built in that would make the difference. 🙂

I like the idea of sewing for my husband, and I know he’d wear things I made for him, but practically speaking, I rarely even sew for myself. I know I’d buy and use a pajama bottom pattern, but I’m not sure how often I would make even a staple item that was more complicated. I might feel differently if my son is still willing to wear Mom-made…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoI like spaghetti strap tops, but only if I can get away with being braless in them (I’m small-breasted, so that usually means layering with a snug tank). Racerback tops always look like activewear to me, and I definitely wouldn’t wear one that showed the bra band itself. I am not a fan of visible bra straps – I think it looks sloppy (and that’s…[Read more]

I second the cargo shorts and button front shirt.
To add, I fell in love with Oliver +s because of the hint of retro styling to the designs, because the styles are timeless and classic. If you do produce a men’s button-down shirt, one that is less “modern” styled and more traditional in design would be wonderful. Especially if it has a great…[Read more]

Once I get the fountain repainted and assembled today, I’m hoping to head upstairs to the studio and work on a pair of white cigarette pants (for me), a white pair of highwaisted shorts (for me), and if I finish both of those items up, I plan to start tracing a pair of 1950’s patterns that are mother-daughter in design. The fair is a 2 weeks away,…[Read more]

@justsewit, how frightening! And probably a little frustrating. I’m quite certain that the repair shop locked the lug nuts on very tightly for you, considering. It’s so frustrating to have car troubles when traveling by yourself with small children. Not to mention having to pay for vehicle work to be done. So glad you were able to repair the issue…[Read more]

My husband returned to work yesterday following vacation time off, with a freshly altered and repaired uniform shirt.
We had plans of a small trip during his time off, but 2 days before his vacation started, he was attacked by a pitbull while checking on a report of a domestic assault. He’s going to sport a lovely scar on his upper left arm, but…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoI love when women wear spaghetti straps! If anyone is concerned with visible bra straps for us less perky creatures, I’m a great fan of the clear bra strap. As for racer back tops, I personally can’t stand them. I feel like they belong with active wear and in a workout setting alone. That said, I don’t like the fit of racerback anything on myself,…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoBack when I was younger/perter/leaner I would have foregone the underwear and worn these styles. Nowadays I’d limit it to gym wear or swimmers (racer back) or lingerie or black tie (spaghetti straps). I can’t deal with visible bra straps, and can’t be bothered with strapless bras for everyday wear 😣

I very much adhere to the “it’s only fabric” ethos.
All of the above advice is excellent but don’t frighten yourself by overthinking it.
In trying something new I figure all we have to lose is fabric costs (and Liesl’s shopping tips are fabulous) and our time. For me, it’s not like I’m turning down party invitations to stay home and sew of an…[Read more] -

So if we develop and release patterns for men, who is volunteering to sew from them for me?

Hi Sarah,
I replied to your email but thought it might be helpful to post part of my reply here to help others with similar questions. I hope that’s alright!
Regarding your questions about fabric: it sort of depends on the style you’re sewing. Actually, a lot depends on the style/pattern you’ve chosen.
If you’re making the Cappuccino…[Read more]
