I’m working on a size 7 School Days coat. It’s got a purple pinwale courduroy outer, fleece scraps interlining and navy satin lining with purple board cloth hood lining! I’m constructing the linings first then the outer π

β¦.and near the bottom of the post is instructions on how to do the ‘growth’ tucked hem. I simply call it a tucked hem and use it mainly because I like the neat finish.
Others like it because when the child grows, it can easily be unp…[Read more] -

Heirloom Sewing and Embroidery 10 years agore lullaby – wouldn’t you make the tucks in your fabric first and then lay the pattern on top for tracing and cutting?
I’d like learn more about growth tucks too, such a clever concept, but the link didn’t work for me either.
How about little pintucks in the Library dress bodice? Crossing over like that? So cool. It would probably involve…[Read more]

Oh, I don’t unpick any of those seams at all. I don’t think it would work even if the time was worth it. I might start raiding my dad’s closet instead of hubbys, though. Dad retired and doesn’t need any more dress clothes. Plus, he’s like 6’3″, so his clothes give me more to work with than my short husband.

Well thanks to @georgeandizzy ‘s blog post and a Facebook promotional coupon, last night I found myself buying the Puppet Show pattern ;-). My girls fall in separate size ranges but since Olivia has all of Ellie’s old things to grow into, I only got the larger size. Once I finish my Easter sewing (Library Dresses for the girls and a Bistro dress…[Read more]

Great plan, @meleliza ! I know what you mean about upcycling adult clothes. You’d think there was ample yardage but the seams hit in funny places, and often unpicking the seams is so much trouble for so little usable fabric that it makes more sense to just trim them off. I do have a nice little pile of pretty buttons robbed from old Banana…[Read more]

I love this pattern but I’ve found it to be quite short on my girls. My girls are on the taller side, though, so depending on what I’m making, I will add a couple of inches and then decide if they’re needed when it’s done. The last couple of times I made this jacket, I added 3 inches to the bottom.

Thanks, everyone! I was intending it as something to wear over short and longsleeve tshirts in the spring and summer so hopefully the fit will be okay.

I understand! Still it is no excuse to not enjoy the experience. You would make overseas friends and set up networks that would probably allow them to visit you in Australia. And we all know there really is no place like home.
You are actually giving your girls a wonderful experience – I lived overseas as a child for a year and still draw from…[Read more]

@justsewit Our posting is for three years, if we have so much fun we don’t want to leave, I will be in the same situation I was in 3 months ago, saying some very sad goodbyes. Only this time I won’t be saying “We might be back in three years!”
I think I’ll be pretty desperate to go home and spend some time with my family though. Thanks Nicole!…[Read more]

We had no power yesterday for much of the day so sewing couldn’t be done. I did make a start on tracing some 6-12 month sized items ready to forge ahead on them before they are actually required. It will work well with a busy winter schedule.

I just finished a gorgeous bright blue courduroy and floral short Tea Party Playsuit for a friend’s baby girl due in a month. This is the fourth Tea Party item I’ve made this week.
I’m planning on moving onto the School Days Coat for the first time, in purple swirly courduroy, lined with fleece π -
