Ellen, I agree with Nicole. I usually let things slide, and it’s fine while it’s just me — but that garment has a life after your kid’s use of it. I find I am too embarrassed to give away some outgrown clothes because of those moments that I didn’t go back and unpick. I have the same exact problem with stitch-in-the-ditch and insides…[Read more]

My current staple is the after school pants , for my slim 5 yr old son, but I may well think of making him a pair of pants using the Sketchbook pattern, which I also own. So this is being faved by me for that point in my future sewing . Thank you for posting this!

Thank you very much NCMimi; I made the Playtime that way mainly because I was concerned about Missy tolerating the lowered sleeve seams, especially in a thicker fabric. I did understand what you were saying about littlies getting into the armholes, and occasionally with more fitted tops like the Sailor top, I have lengthened the armholes…[Read more]

Well the apple picking dress is now done and now I am on to making some last minute hopscotch tops and dresses. I have three on the go and am sewing the assembly style.
You can see the apple picking dress here.

Heirloom Sewing and Embroidery 10 years agoSo this has become the inspiration dress: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/76420524903361892/ I ran up a muslin this weekend because I needed to draft sleeves so I could best make use of the eyelet border. Also, I lowered the neckline of my base pattern to match the inspiration dress. I just ordered silk charmeuse for the sash. I might line it…[Read more]

If you think they’re too long, go with it and shorten them. You probably don’t want to make them wider to compensate. Try to curve the ends of the dart slightly inward starting about 1/2″ from the end of the dart.
You know, all the “rules” say that you have to end the dart further away the larger your bust is. I disagree. The larger the dart, the…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 10 years agomeasure your high bust and your full bust. If there is more than 2″ difference, using your high bust will help you get the correct fit in the shoulders and over all bodice. So if your high bust is 34″ but your full bust is 38″, you want to pick the pattern bust size 34. Then, you add width and length to accommodate the bust fullness.
It all takes…[Read more]

Sewing for Yourself 10 years agoI’m totally new to the world of adult sewing, and I’m hoping that this is one of those obvious things that everyone knows (and can tell me, cause I don’t).
I’m trying to find the correct pattern size to use to make bust adjustments. As per all the advice I can see, I have taken my high bust measurement. None of the patterns I have offers a high…[Read more]

I just found out why my son announced he wanted to jump the creek on his bike! They are reciting Mulga Bill’s Bicycle as the class poem for the school speech comp!
He’s not going to do it though, because its not the kind you’d want to attempt.
