EllenMCM replied to the topic Recital dress ideas? in the forum sewing with liesl + co and oliver + s 10 years ago
I’ve made the Hide and Seek and the Library dress for recitals. You could do either in black and white. I’m also a huge fan of the poofy tulle skirt idea, but I have a violinist and she doesn’t have to negotiate with a piano bench at recitals.

I made two flower girl dresses 3 years ago with tulle over the top of the silk skirts. I used a pattern from another company but the fairytale dress could be easily modified to have the tulle over the top of the main skirt. I used an invisible zip in the back but can’t remember what I did with the tulle. I can have a look at my photos and the…[Read more]

Thank you Heidi for your quick answers. Is it written anywhere on the pages about the seam allowance and I am silly enough not to see it. Thanks again I can now start to makes the two hats for my twin grandsons.

All Oliver and S patterns, unless designed for knits, have a 1/2 ” seam allowance.
Knit patterns have 1/4″ seam allowances. -

Thank you all for the suggestions. I don’t think I have enough tulle to do a circle skirt and I can’t buy any more as I am in the country this week, nowhere near a fabric store. I was thinking about Heidi’s suggestion and wondering if I could make the skirt as called for but shorten the outer fabric like she suggested and somehow construct it as…[Read more]

Still working on the Arielle. I am really enjoying taking my time and producing a beautiful garment. It is a simple pattern with some opportunities for nice touches like a bias-bound facing and hand-blind-stitched hem (did that last night in front of the TV). Tonight I’ll make buttonholes and sew on buttons and then it will be ready to present…[Read more]

juliamom2009 replied to the topic Uniform Fabric Sourcing in the forum off topic 10 years ago
I’m really lucky that I have a great brick and mortar store near me – I went shopping for school uniform fabric there. I bought about 5 different substrates – all manufactured by Robert Kaufman. I have pre-washed all, and they washed up great. One was a twill, one corduroy, one that feels almost like a heavier weight stable knit (suitable for a…[Read more]

Once you make up your mind to do the extra work, nz; I’m sure you’ll feel pleased that you did – especially as you say that the fabric will ‘appreciate’ it. Sit down with a cuppa, and something relaxing on the radio, and hem away quietly.

T, and Heidi, your denim projects sound very interesting – looking forward to seeing the results. I’m more than half way thru my first Carousel dress, although, I have cut out another. The WIP is size 5 in raspberry wide wale corduroy with a striped cotton for the pockets, cuffs, and for the binding. I’ve just finished binding the hem which always…[Read more]

Good for you! tweens are difficult to fit since their baby parts all seem to grow at different times and I am sure she will feel very pretty and special in a dress made just for her. I have found that the new site for Patsy Aiken Designs has girls patterns up and including a size 16. They are similar in style to many of the O+S patterns but fill…[Read more]

Thank you for your help I did what you suggested and went with the chest measurement. I cut a 12/14 bodice out and put a pin at the intersection of the underarm and side seam allowance and pivoted it out to a 1X. Then cut the waistband out for a 1X. It seemed to work, I’m waiting to hear if it fits. Fingers crossed.

Someone may have already suggested this but I would love a Moto type jacket for girls that might also work for boys.
