Oh the scissors. My son came up to me with my office/paper scissors and said they weren’t cutting. I examined them and found sticky gunky tape residue on them. My son is a tape fiend. I told him they wouldn’t cut because they were covered in sticky residue. I watched the light bulb click on over his head. I washed them. I gave him the evil…[Read more]

@caraskates cord can look especially lush if you reverse the nap a la @liesl 🙂

I didn’t make much holiday wear this year. I made 2 pairs of shorts, 2 t-shirts and a romper and only one of the pairs of shorts was Oliver and S! (The other was Ottobre as was the romper and the t-shirts were Kwiksew and MIP)
However I did make 11 (9 large and 2 small) messenger bags from LTTS 🙂 -

I have a Brother SE400. I don’t have any software, but I did use a trial version of Sew What Pro when I was doing some monograms. There are a ton of resources online for Sew What Pro.
If you are just doing designs, you generally don’t need software, unless you are going to merge designs or alphabets. Call me an enabler, but the absolute…[Read more]

I have the 770. I just google “free appliqués” and “free embroidery” and have found a palethora of free files that way. I save them to my external hard drive, and only put what I am planning to use ASAP on my embroidery file only thumb drive (a regular thumb drive, with no files but embroidery files on it). You just have to make sure the files…[Read more]

my favorite (because it’s practical!) mashup I’ve done is ironically the uniform skirts for dd… Sailboat shape and kickpleat, but badminton waistline/shorts construction (with buttonhole elastic) and playtime leggings/Liesl’s under-the-skirt knit shorts from her blog post.
but runner-up is the sunny day shorts/croquet dress in icepop…I might…[Read more]

may I suggest a nice wool for the pants for warmth? I am volunteered to make an outfit for my nephew whenever they decide to christen him (hopefully sometime in the spring) but I saw some white wool suiting at Joann’s that made me want to start right away.

Thanks all! These are great suggestions and ideas!
Nicole, I will definitely refer to your tutorial when I make them.
Based on his height/weight, he is at the bottom of the 12-18month size so I plan to make that with maybe just a tad more length. And because he will probably only wear them this once, I want them to be a good fit now and not…[Read more]

Working slowly, I hemmed and pressed the pleats on half the Anna skirt and topstitched one orange part of BB8’s today.

They sound lovely! I lengthened the leg and put in contrast turn ups https://flic.kr/p/iTaDxk
The turnups might be a bit too informal got the baptism. I think I just straightened the pattern from the knee(ish) and added length.

Love the idea of an embellishment challenge.
I have plenty of mash up ideas. They are just stuck in my head for now.

I agree with sateen for choice. It will look slightly dressier also. Don’t be afraid to add a little bit of colour into the mix. Even though my son wore the Christening gown I had already made, I made a silk romper for him to wear to my sister’s wedding the same year, in ivory silk and lightblue mini piping. It was perfect and very manly looking…[Read more]

I don’t have an embroidery machine but I am currently saving up for one 🙂
I would check out this forum on pattern review dedicated to machine embroidery, there has recently been discussions about embroidery programs. http://sewing.patternreview.com/SewingDiscussions/forum/25
Here’s a link to some free softwear by Bernina. It should work with the…[Read more] -

I’m working on a badminton skirt with the skirt part replaced by a pieced and pleated floor lengthy skirt to mimic the skirt from Anna’s coronation dress. And I now have the fabric to make the class picnic/garden party/swingers dress too 🙂
Maybe the next challenge could be an embelishment challenge. I’m thinking of all the embellished messenger…[Read more] -

What top are you planning with the pants? If the top hangs over the pants you’ll have less pressure getting a perfect fit. I would vote for a sateen for the pants to give them a little structure. A cord would be my second choice.
If you are making the top too…do you have a way to monogram the front? I think an all white sailboat set with a…[Read more]

Hi @caraskates, I think they will look adorable.
I have a tute here http://fiveandcounting-motherof5.blogspot.com.au/2011/08/short-cut-sailboat-pants.html if you would like a look at the construction (apologies for the dated graphics, I was in my colour phase)
These are a great trouser to size up, which will give you that longer leg you are…[Read more]

I was just asked/volunteered to make pants for my youngest cousin’s baptism (in 2 weeks). For many reasons, his baptism was pushed back and now it will coincide with his first birthday! Obviously he doesn’t fit into the family christening gown, nor would that be practical on a 1yo who crawls and climbs everything.
I just made a Sailboat skirt…[Read more]
