Wow, @sewgirl23, that DOES look like it was a challenge. And it turned out beautifully!

These are great answers! I hear you on the curtains, @justsewit and @enbee. I made sheer linen Roman shades for the living room in NYC a year or two ago and they were brutal. And I also hear you on the quilt, @rhythmtyagi. Your answers are all very interesting. Keep them coming!

Well, you’re practically reading my mind! Thanks for the feedback, and I think you’ll be happy with at least one of the fall patterns, then. xo

Ooh, well done @TamaraH! My mom sewed me a very similar prom dress: similar silhouette and fabric, but mine was strapless. I recall multiple fittings and many late nights on her part.
But think of the great memories she’ll have!
What’s on your “to tackle” list? Anything you’re really wanting to learn?

I’m thinking about looking for a heavy twill when I’m in London next week. I’ve realized there’s an outerwear gap in my closet: winter coats, rain coats, and nothing in between. What do most people wear when the weather turns too cool for a raincoat but before you need a full-on winter coat? I’d like something that travels well (i.e., not too bulky).

Sewing for Yourself 9 years agoYeah, it’s difficult to write a pattern that includes instructions for people with and without a serger. I guess the good news is that you can always draw in a smaller seam allowance if you know you’re going to use the serger/overlock/etc. I’m glad you like the result!

And what made it difficult? In the end, was it a triumph or a disaster? Or something in between?
And as long as I’m asking questions, what’s the next skill or project you want to tackle–but maybe are a little afraid to try?

Well, as a child of the seventies in the US I remember when President Ford announced we would be joining the rest of the world and going metric. And I remember getting a crash course in metric measurement in grade school.
And then, nothing…. The people spoke and said, “We don’t like change. And we like all this confusing non base ten stuff and…[Read more]

Generally if the curved hem is slight you shouldn’t have a problem. As demonstrated by @juliamom2009!

I’ve always waxed afterward so it doesn’t clog up the machine. I know someone who sews with waxed canvas all the time and it does tend to make your machine a bit dirty, so if you wax beforehand be sure to use a press cloth and clean your machine well afterwards!

@yeppoon4703 Fabric requirements for all our patterns are a pretty simple and straightforward 1:1 conversion.
OK, not really, but pretty close.
When we do our fabric requirements we do them to the nearest 1/4 yard because most stores won’t sell in quantities of less than that. We always use our pattern development software to calculate the…[Read more]

I’d totally wear them together! I think it all depends on the fabrics you choose. But yes, they would absolutely work as a pair. It’s been on my list to sew a matching top and skirt using these two patterns, so if you get to it before I do I hope you’ll post photos! I think they could be cute as separates, but also as a matching set.

Thanks for asking about this! I’m sorry to report that we won’t be releasing any new Oliver + S patterns this spring. All of my energies have been going into the upcoming book, which will be ready in early September. In the meantime, later this months we will be announcing some new Lisette patterns for summer. And come September you can also…[Read more]
