Hello friends!
Here’s one more item I recently sewed for myself. I’ve been holding onto this cut of Liberty lawn for quite a while. Strawberry Thief is my favorite Liberty pattern, and I feel like I’ll wear this dark gray colorway quite a bit. So I sewed a Camp Shirt with the small cut that I had. The blouse will be a nice layering piece when I want a little texture in my wardrobe.
There was so little of this fabric, I had to piece together my facings. And there wasn’t leftover fabric for pockets, but with this busy print I probably don’t need them anyway. (Still, I love pockets!)
Why a Camp Shirt instead of a Classic Shirt? When it comes to soft, drapey fabrics, I very much prefer a convertible collar like the Camp Shirt because it doesn’t collapse on itself when the neck is worn open. Yes, this lawn was substantial enough to support a Classic Shirt collar and collar band, but somehow this style felt more appropriate for the fabric to me. Maybe because I plan to wear it with a grandpa cardigan and black-and-white herringbone Hollywood Trousers in addition to jeans. I just associate some fabrics with a classic shirt collar and others with a convertible collar. Does that make sense?
The center-back inverted box pleat makes me happy, too. It’s just a nice little detail.
You can pick up your own copy of the Camp Shirt + Dress sewing pattern in paper or as a digital pattern. We can’t wait to see what you do with this pattern!
It’s really stylish! I love Liberty fabrics and have long thought of using them in a blouse, but they are so darn expensive. I hope to find some on sale soon, because now I want a Liberty blouse, too!
Love the shirt fabric, and how it looks on you! So pretty. Can you do a post on the two types of collars you spoke about? I do not know the difference. Thanks! Ronda
How can you go wrong with Liberty? Such a classic (not Classic) blouse! I like your explanation about fabric drape and collar style… that makes a lot of sense.
Looking fantastic as always. Liberty is a dream to sew with ..and we have all pieced facings from time to time. Looks great
That looks fabulous with the drapery fabric!
Love it. Just bought myself some Liberty lawn on a pre-Christmas trip to London. Wondering whether to make the Classic or Camp shirt. Have made the Classic before in Liberty lawn so wanted to try the Camp shirt but was a bit worried it might look a bit too ‘Bermuda shirt’ with the patterns. Now I can see that it doesn’t. Liberty fabric is expensive but the quality is fabulous and you can always console yourself with the fact that you’re saving money compared to the ready to wear Liberty shirts!
I love this shirt and this pattern! Not only do I love Liberty of London Lawn but Liberty of London Percale, plus it is less expensive and the quality is wonderful as well!
H! I’m trying the classic shirt for the first time and also using liberty fabric. I noticed a blog post awhile back where you added a popover front and would like to try that but can’t find it.
Sure, you can find all the blog posts related to a particular style in the “blog” tab under that style in our shop. Here are the posts for the Classic Shirt. I hope that help. Enjoy! https://oliverands.com/shop/classic-shirt-sewing-pattern.html#tab-blog
