How about washable fabric pen/chalk for marking off patterns, measuring tape, quilting ruler (again, for marking straight lines on fabric, such as for a pillowcase), one of those needle threaders like so:

Maybe a magnetic pincushion? Elastic and elastic threader for a Lazy Days skirts? Seam ripper?

My nieces have taken a liking to their Aunt’s hobby (!!!!) and have requested sewing kits for Christmas. I am really excited about putting these together and would love ideas from the O & S community on what else to include.

They are almost 5 & 7 and there are no other kids in the house, their mom is okay with some sharp things but asked I use…[Read more]

Hey, everyone thanks for the help!
I tweeted the costume designer for the movie and he said that it was a silk satin (he thinks) so im going to have a look and see what i can find, i now love social media now lol. I found the dress to be very matte and not shiny at all like satin so il try to look for something similar.
    Thanks for the help:)

Yes there is a great product that could help if it is behavioural. Its called the Gro clock. Its a clock that you can set the time to and it acts as a sleep trainer. It has a sun and moon picture and stars that disappear. The idea is the child has to wait to see the sun pop up on the clock to indicate the time they can get out of bed and this is…[Read more]

  • Thank you!
Glad to know i wasn’t actually mucking it up after all. The instructions are always so perfect i could see no way of getting it wrong!

  • For posterity’s sake, this issue was due to a minor labeling error on the initial release of the pattern. Details can be found here:

    Finished waist too small

The issue has been corrected now and future downloads of the pattern will be of the revised version.

  • The pattern has now been corrected to show the correct size labels on the center front and center back pleats.

If you purchased the pattern prior to this posting, you can use your link to download and save an updated copy of the pattern. (The only changes are to the pleat size labels on pages 25, 41, and 51 of the PDF file.)

    For anyone…[Read more]

Every year as Christmas draws closer, I see all the beautiful wrapping ideas on Pinterest and think to myself, “this year…this year I will make my gifts pretty!” And each year, I’m down to the wire on finishing the actual gift and end up just (methodically because that’s how I am) slapping some wrapping paper on it :-P. At least last year we…[Read more]

If it’s a behavioral (i.e. not medical) issue, there are nightlights that visually show the child when they’re supposed to stay in bed vs when it’s time to get up – a moon lights up for stay-in-bed time, and you can program the built-in timer to switch to lighting up a sun when it’s ok for them to get up. This is one I was recommended (not…[Read more]

I also have a wakeful kid, I didn’t get five continuous hours of sleep until well past her second birthday. You are not alone!

Could it be that she is just not yet ready to sleep independently? Could you put her bed in your room or let her sleep with you? It sounds like you are a source of comfort and security for her.

    We like having ours…[Read more]

HaHa @LightningMcStitch you gave me an idea, maybe I’ll have a few drinks before bed so I can sleep through it and let hubby deal with it! 😉

No advice. But plenty of empathy. I know we all do all kinds of things to get our kids to sleep.

  • Ladies, I’ve finally found the problem! It’s quite simple. And totally silly on my party. I reversed the size labels for the center front and center back pleats, so the lines and dots that are labelled size 0 should actually be size 20. And vice versa.

I’m so sorry about this! Thanks for your patience while I figured it out. The good news is…[Read more]

Can’t help, but I’ve just come home from a party, it’s well past midnight and I saw the topic header “go to bed” and I thought, righto I will!
    I may have had a few drinks….
Good luck with the kid situation. I’m told they grow up and move out eventually.

This is super-duper off topic but since there are so many mother’s here and I am desperate I thought I’d give it a try…

P turned 5 on Monday and I can’t tell you the last time she slept through the night (we’re talking years). She wakes up anywhere from 1-3+ times at night. When she does, she comes to my room and wakes me up. Generally she runs…[Read more]
