you can also use some nice colored elastic as your drawstring. It’s easy to tie and untie for little fingers, but also works if they just want to pull the pants on or off without untying.

Good luck with the quilt, Heidi! I took your advise and didn’the re-cut the class picnic blouse. It was a size 5 and I have been sewing size 4 in O+S for both Chloe and Kaya. My husband has very good tastes in sewing machines. He knows I’ve been talking about and investigating embroidery machines.
We were walking around a quilt show over the weekend and he points to a machine that is embroidering and says ” What about that one?”. It was a top of the line Bernina 880 worth about $13,000!

Keeping in mind this is for a 3 yr old, I’d skip the draw string or just sew a decorative/fake one on but not functional. the problem is that you want him to be able to use the bathroom as well as dress himself with as little assist as possible, the real beauty of elastic waist pants for preschoolers in my mind.
