Cooking and Baking 10 years agoBtw, I love Swiss meringue frosting to finish cakes — it takes care of the egg whites left over. You can also use 6 whole eggs in the cake but the texture will be a little more open and have more crumbs… works fine for cupcakes tho! For white cake, 270 g egg whites instead. Kids (and many adults!) love the white cake with a handful of sprinkles…[Read more]

Cooking and Baking 10 years agoI forgot to ask, chocolate or yellow cake? You have a few chocolate ones to try so i’ll give you vanilla. This quantity fits well in a 6-quart mixer; it’s originally from the Cake Bible. Bake at 340 F or 170 C… this makes 2 12″ round layers or 10″ squares, approximately enough for 40 people (maybe 30 teenagers!) Grease pan sides, line bottoms…[Read more]

Cooking and Baking 10 years ago@Reeni, thank you!!!
Do you mean attendance or weighing scales? I have kitchen scales and my 1960 Sunbeam mixer 🙂
I am waiting on my new stove (happy dance) and my existing free standing oven is being moved out to the shed as a warmer/hotplate. It is gas and quite large but the door seals have gone so not so good for baking.
I would love your…[Read more]

Cooking and Baking 10 years agodo you have a scale? I can give you the recipe we use at work (bakeshop) — it freezes well and we make our wedding cakes for up to 300 people with it.
Short answer, for 200 people I think it is easiest to do one “showpiece” cake and a large sheet cake, they can be cut at the same time so nobody is waiting too long for cake. Or cupcakes! 200…[Read more] -

I have just received a phone call from my adult nephew who is currently in Canada on a uni exchange for a semester. He is actually thinking of transferring for a further semester should his exchange not be able to be extended. This is a good sign. Although he says he misses elements of home, like some foods. Being an athletic chap, he gets to…[Read more]

I spend a few minutes finding out more of this pattern you are using Heidi. It sounds very interesting and looks like a nice dress to sew. Will you show us a pic when you are done?
I thought about heading back into the sewing room this evening but decided on other things. It was just aswell as the evening would have been (pleasantly) interrupted.

@juliamom2009 janice that cape is a monster size version of the messy kid bib from Little Things To Sew, worn backwards. Because the fastening is off set to one side it shouldn’t be too visible from the front.
Hope that helps as an idea. -

@juliamom2009 I found this pic of word girl, I would say the yellow piece is definitely her cape.

I’m making Cashmerette’s new Appleton wrap dress. It has cup sizing up to F/G and hips up to 58″! So far it’s looking good. I’ll be interested to see the fit.

My kid is going to be Word Girl (a cartoon that I actually LOVE) and I’d love some advice on her cape….if you look at the photo I’ve attached, I’m not sure if the yellow around the neck of the top is supposed to be part of her cape?
This will be a super simple costume to make….mostly – once I figure out the cape/neckline!
Any advice?
