fabric and styling ideas for the new havana pajamas sewing pattern

I’m glad you’re so excited by our new Havana Pajamas sewing pattern! Thanks for all the love. I hope you’re thinking about cozy pajamas and Christmas, because there’s plenty of time! (You could also sew our Oliver + S Bedtime Story or Sleepover Pajamas if you’re sewing for the kids!)

I’ve been collecting photos of pjs in fun prints for you because I firmly believe pajamas are a great way to use fun prints, especially anything you maybe wouldn’t dare to wear otherwise! So here you go with some cute prints I found.

All of these are so pretty, aren’t they? Cotton poplin or sateen would both be great fabrics for this style.

The fun champagne print, above right, reminds me of something from Kate Spade. And I nearly spit out my coffee when I saw the photo below. Very similar fabric to what I chose, no? (I found mine on Etsy, hand printed in India, if you’re looking for something similar. It’s available in a wide variety of color combinations, too!)

And don’t forget that satin I was loving so much! I think poly satin is a nightmare to sew (it frays so badly!), but silk satin would be such a luxury… to sew and to wear!

For fabrics I recommend printed or yarn-dyed light- to medium-weight cotton for good results. The block-printed tiger-patterned fabric from India that I used for the long-sleeved version is a cotton lawn, and I chose a a heavy yarn-dyed cotton shirting for the short-sleeved version. This is also an ideal pattern for Liberty of London tana lawn if you’re a fan! Much as I love them, I’m not a big wearer of prints EXCEPT when it comes to pajamas. Then I’m a huge fan.

You could also use lightweight knits for this style. A good friend gave S a really lovely pajama set in a satin-y jersey when she went to college, and I’ve been admiring them ever since. This would be a great pattern for a knit since the fabric doesn’t need to have enough body to support a traditional button placket.

Obviously you can also use flannel for winter, too. They would be very cozy, and I think they would be so cute in a big buffalo plaid.

And don’t forget that satin I was dreaming about! So elegant!

In any case, I hope these give you some ideas. I’ve also made a Havana Pajamas Pinterest board with more photos, and I’ll keep adding to it as I find more ideas.

Next, photos from our testers! I know you always like to see how our wonderful testers sew the new patterns, and they didn’t disappoint this time, either!

You can pick up your own copy of the Havana Pajamas sewing pattern in paper or in digital format. I hope you’ll tag us #lieslandco and #lieslcohavanapajamas. I’m so excited to see how you make these your own!

would it be easy enough to make this into a nightgown?

    1. Of course! Just lengthen it as much as you like: tunic, just above the knee, etc. You could also shape the hem to give a nightshirt effect if you want.
