introducing the laureles square-neck top + dress

Hello again!

Here we are with our third spring pattern, which I hope you will love. If you missed them, our other new patterns are the Prado Trench Coat and the Positano Blouse + Dress pattern.

Here is the third and final of our new patterns, the Laureles Square-Neck Top + Dress pattern. This style was designed specifically to fill a gap that often isn’t covered in sewing patterns. This is an easy-to-sew pull-on square-neck top with princess seams to help you get a great fit. And, like many of our sewing patterns, it comes with cup sizes!

What I like about this pattern is that it’s contemporary in feeling with the square neck at both front and back, but it’s not too revealing or open, so you don’t need to worry about the shoulders slipping. Bra straps fully covered, just slip it on and go! Cute and stylish but also practical, the kind of style you can throw on and forget about it for the rest of the day.

You’ll also like the clever facing to finish the armholes and neck with one piece. It makes the finish very simple and not fussy, and the facing stays in place.

This style can be made with and without sleeves. View A, the top, includes short sleeves. View B, the dress, is sleeveless and includes a gathered skirt and on-seam pockets.

Because of the way we’ve designed the pattern pieces, it’s easy to lengthen or shorten the bodice and skirt as you like, so you can achieve a variety of different looks with this pattern. I’ll show you a longer version of the dress soon. If you wanted, you could turn this style into a dropped-waist dress by lowering the bodice cut line. The shaping is already there, you just need to decide how much length you want to add or subtract. Prefer more of an empire waist? Easy to do, also.

Choose from a wide variety of fabrics for this style. For the top, lightweight woven fabrics work well. Anything from soft cottons and linen to chambray, lawn, shirtings, and textured fabrics like eyelet or lace would work well. For the dress, I prefer something with a little drape, like rayon, linen, or anything else that hangs nicely. I used a seersucker fabric (in black, it might be the first time I’ve seen black seersucker?) for View A, and despite the fact that seersucker doesn’t drape (like, at all…) it was fine. For View B I used a silk noil, which is a great option because it looks a little coarse and rugged but it’s actually very smooth and lustrous and the colors are so saturated! And of course it drapes beautifully, too.

I’ll be back soon to show you some inspiration for this style, as well as some ways you might wear it. In the meantime, you can pick up your own copy of this pattern in paper or in digital format. I hope you’ll tag us #lieslandco and #laureles so we can see what you make with it. That’s always the best part of releasing new patterns!
