take us fabric shopping in your city

Have you been enjoying our series of posts on where to shop for fabric in different cities around the world? Based on the number of comments these posts are receiving, it looks like many of you are finding them enjoyable and useful.

We’re planning to continue this series through next year and would like to have you contribute a post about your city. Right now we have volunteers lined up for many places outside the United States, but we’re looking for volunteers who would like to contribute a post about their hometowns in America. We’re especially interested in hearing from you if you live in one of these places.

  1. How about Los Angeles? I could write a post for you.

Hi Justine! I was thinking the same thing when I read this post. I am a fellow reader of this blog, and although I live in Orange County I LOVE fabric shopping in LA. I like Michael Levine (the shoppers are as interesting as some of the fabric at times!) and love the LOFT place they have upstairs where you can dig through boxes as if you are hunting for buried treasure which I suppose we are in a sense!. I have scoured most of the places in the Fabric District but can’t remember many of the names of the smaller shops. In Orange County there is a great place called M&L which is huge, and they have two areas with heavily discounted fabric which is wonderful if you like a good bargain. They have a sister store called Jennys Fabrics in Fountain Valley, but it is smaller than M&L. If I may ask, what are your LA favorites? I can’t wait to see this post. I need more fabric like a hole in the head, but can one ever really have enough? I have some pieces for a few years, just sitting there waiting until that special project comes along!

    2. Thanks Justine. We’ve tentatively got a post for LA lined up already. But we’ll be in touch if that one doesn’t come through.

  2. I would love to write about Santa Barbara. http://www.sewsantabarbara.com

We live in the Oakland Hills so San Francisco is in close proximity. However, I would say Oakland, Berkeley and Richmond are much more of a “hot bed” for textile artists, fabric stores and studios. Here are a few you may wish to check out; Stone Mountain and Daughter (Berkeley), Bay Quilts (Richmond), A Verb For Keeping Warm (Oakland), Monaluna Design (Walnut Creek.) Let me know if I can help!
