Remember Moda’s Country Fair theme from Spring 2011 Quilt Market which was carried through to a designer blog hop last September? At that Quilt Market, all Moda’s designers contributed a favorite recipe and a pattern for a quilt block. Shop owners could stop by each booth to collect the complete set.
Well, this week is your chance to stock up on holiday treat recipes and interesting quilt block patterns, because the Moda designers are sharing their creations with you on their blogs all week long. And today is my turn.
The recipe I contributed is one of my favorite cookie recipies. I found it in a Martha Stewart magazine years ago, and I’ve loved it ever since. Don’t let the title turn you off. The black pepper in these cookies actually helps to intensify the flavor of the chocolate. S will run screaming from any dish that contains a noticeable amount of pepper, but I can’t keep her away from these cookies.
Taking off from the country fair theme, I designed a block I called the Ferris Wheel.

Thanks for the block and the recipe. I thought the pepper would not be a good addition but I have tried other recipes before with a surprise ingredient that turned out to be very good. So maybe we will try these too.

Interesting cookie recipe – especially the black pepper to intensify the chocolate. I’ve never heard of that before although I have heard that adding just 2 drops of tabasco sauce to any recipe intensifies the flavour. Something to do with awakening one’s taste buds, I believe.

I LOVE these cookies too but have made changes over the years to “improve” them … Don’t have my notes to hand but I know that I don’t bother keeping espresso powder in the house just for these so just use regular ground coffee. Works like a charm. And for that “just out of the oven flavor” leave the sealed storage container in the sun for a bit … They go all freshly soft. Mmmm!

Oh my gosh that recipe is one of our favorites! It is a bit different but it is also Marths Stewart and it is used for cut out cookies. Years ago I made giant pumpkin cut out cookies for favors for my daughters Halloween birthday party. I HAve always thought of it for Halloween but have not made it in years though the kids still talk about it. I will make my Christmas cutouts with it this year. Your Ferris Wheel block has lots of “motion” — a perfect name for it and it should make a great secondary pattern — always fun to see what surprises come, when blocks are set together.

My daughter and I made the Chocolate Black Pepper Cookies yesterday. They are good, with a little bit of heat after you swallow them. I think we are going to make Chocolate Truffles with Sea Salt and Chocolate Black Pepper for a cookie exchange.
