playtime: secret agent trench coat as a lab coat

I don’t know about you, but we’re spending a lot of time indoors this winter. It’s been a colder winter than our usual mild weather, and indoor playtime often means more playdates. And more playdates means more dress-up time. More dress-up time means more dress-up clothes are necessary. And do we ever have a dress-up project to inspire you! How cute is this doctor lab coat?

This genius little project was made by Debbie, who had the fantastic idea to re-purpose one of our patterns. I’ll let her tell you about it herself:

Because all of the dress-up clothing I make is well worn (well, actually abused and trashed), I try not to use expensive fabric.  For the lab coat, I used a discarded heavy cotton table cloth, and it proved to be a perfect weight.  The Secret Agent Trench Coat pattern was an ideal choice for a lab coat because it can be worn over layers of clothing, even a jacket when playing outdoors in a playhouse making house calls.

The only changes I made to the pattern were to use one row of buttons (instead of making it double breasted), and I left off some of the details such as the belt and the sleeve tabs. I made several large patch pockets, onto one of which I stitched a red cross using felt, and I used my embroidery machine to create her name.
