Digital playtime dressMade this in a size 2 in linen and it turned out perfect! Have made many Oliver & S patterns and they are all very good! Was this helpful?Perfect dress!I’m illustrating a children’s book and needed a dress for the child model who is the main character. I had envisioned a simple dress like this with 3 buttons down the back and this was exactly what I needed. I appreciate the kindness and clarity in the phrasing of the directions. The dress is perfect for the illustrations. I’ll let you know when the book is published! Was this helpful?A sweet little dressThis pattern was well made, with excellent instructions. I made it for my granddaughter using a family tartan I had purchased in Edinburgh. I will be giving it to her for Christmas in Scotland.1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cannot tell you how many times I am going to make thisQSoo easy to follow! Such a flattering shape and very versatile pattern!1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Playtime dress and leggingsEasy to make and made up well.Dress/tunic and leggings are generously sized. Instructions are clear and easy to follow Loved every bit of making up this pattern for my 2 granddaughters and will make it again. Was this helpful?Lovely little dress! This is a lovely little dress that I plan to make several more times before my darling little one outgrows the pattern. It is generously sized as my daughter wears 4T in RTW and I made her the 3T with plenty of growing room. I have not made the leggings yet, but hope to very soon. A very simple, easy pattern to sew with excellent instructions, and the perfect classic staple! Was this helpful?Fun PatternThe pattern was very easy to download and assemble. I liked that the leggings pattern was separate from the dress. I made two dresses for my granddaughter in size 2T. The first one I made from a flannel. I used the button back and did all the top stitching around the collar and pockets. The second dress I made out of a knit. I did not see why I would need to use buttons. I noticed on the pattern the notches on the bodice back line up with the center back. I placed those on the fabric fold and cut the back as one piece. I used seam tape in the shoulder seams to prevent stretching. I cut a piece of fabric 2” by 1” less than the measurement of the neck and sewed the narrow ends together. Then I quartered it and sewed it to the neck in a 1/2” seam stretching to fit. I then trimmed the seam, carefully clipped it, and ironed it under. I used a double needle to top stitch around the neck. Then I trueness it over and very carefully trimmed away the excess close to the top stitching on the the neckband inside the neck. The dresses turned out very cute and my granddaughter loves them.7 of 7 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?PerfectMade this as a Christmas present for my 18 month old granddaughter, in a vintage rayon fabric purchased at a fabric recycling store. Fabric was slippery to sew, but it turned out beautifully. I made the dress length combined with rayon knit leggings so that sh3 can wear it now as a dress and later as a top, as she grows. Was this helpful?Wonderful PatternWe (me, my granddaughters, and their moms) love this pattern. I made it several times in the smaller sizes, and just ordered the larger sizes. It's perfect for big girls and little - a classic dress that makes up well in lots of different fabrics. It's a favorite!2 of 2 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?playtime tunic and leggingsMade the Playtime tunic and leggings. I did the first one in a cotton print with a coordinating knit for the leggings. The second one was in a holiday knit, no leggings. I did not do the top stitching on either. Loved both versions. Only had an issue with some stretching on the knit where the bodice joined the skirt. Should have used some interfacing, like I did on the shoulders. Don't have a lot of experience with knits so far. Also made a doll version for the American Girl baby....Was this helpful?Playtime Dress is adorableI made the Playtime Dress for my 6 month old granddaughter in a pink plaid flannel. It is adorable. The instructions were great. The topstitching color detail is sweet though subtle. My granddaughter is in the 80-90th percentile in height and weight and the 6-12 month size fits perfectly and should last the winter. Was this helpful?Playtime dressLoved the pattern. Have used commercial patterns for years but enjoyed the simplicity of this one. Made a sample for my great granddaughter in knit then made her a very plain one in moss green velvet with a double needle top stitch on hem neckline and sleeves. Her mom wanted something very plain and this is just gorgeous. Will ale an excellent Christmas dress and since it is plain can be used later as well. I thought the pattern was a little pricey but I guess with the leggings it is priced not too bad. Have you thought about a pinafore dress pattern?1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Great pattern!I absolutely love this pattern and was pleased with the dress I made for my daughter. The instructions were straight forward and the dress sewed up quickly. I love that it came with the leggings pattern, and that the dress can be made in either woven or knit.1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?SweetVery straight forward, pleased that it came with the leggings pattern. I was looking in particular for a pattern to use with knit fabric as my daughter has been requesting that I use this over woven. The pattern though is nearly identical to one I already had from made by rae, so I'm not sure why that one wasn't also for knit. The leggings as a combo made it worth the price. Was this helpful?Love this pattern! This is my favorite dress pattern, and my daughter just aged out of version 1 (up to 4T), so I bought the 5T and larger one. It is easy to sew, with good instructions, accurate pattern pieces, and straightforward assembly. I typically skip the topstitching and for a dressier look, add a sash. With practice, I can make one in under 3 hours (not including buttons/snaps, which I have to psych myself up to do). My only criticism is that the various size lines are so tight that they are practically impossible to follow on a few pieces, but there is so little difference between them that it doesn't seem to matter. Lovely dress and my daughter loves it.2 of 2 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Lovely pattern for new sewistThe pattern was great and easy to follow for a newby. Everything came together wonderfully in a gorgeous quilting cotton with origami cranes on it. The only downside is that in cotton it does look a little old fashioned. I am going to repeat it in a knit fabric and maybe try the tunic length. Definitely bought more patterns for her and I to sew up so overall I’m really pleased. Was this helpful?Lovely dress and leggingsI love this pattern! Both my granddaughters now have lovely Liberty cord print dresses for Christmas. Just such a great pattern.1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Adorable pattern!I loved the style and the instructions were easy to follow, but I felt the sizing was a bit small. I lengthened the sleeves and the pants legs quite a lot to make sure they would fit.1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Sew easy and super cuteThis is the perfect play dress... not only because its super simple to make, but you can do all sorts of creative additions if you're feeling daring.... or not! I highly recommend this pattern for any age. It's a classic babydfoll dress. I haven't made these particular leggings, but the patterns and instructions look simple enough. Was this helpful?Love it!I have 3 girls and I've sewn this pattern so many times for them I've lost count . I had to buy the bigger sizes as my oldest is 6. It's easy to sew and fits great . Also works well for customizing ! I'm a fan:)2 of 2 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Great PatternI used this pattern to make a birthday dress for my daughter. The pattern is easy to follow. I love how the dress turned out and am looking forward to my daughter celebrating in it!1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Excellent PatternLoved this pattern! I made my girls the sleeveless version of the dress and the fit was awesome.2 of 2 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Darling! As always, the instructions and design of this pattern are the best! I have a deep appreciation for the different techniques used in every Oliver & S pattern - it's like I'm in school! I have made a dress out of flannel and a tunic from knit, as well as many, many leggings for my girls. The faux Peter Pan collar on the dress/tunic is delightful and my daughter loves the addition of pockets. Highly recommended!1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Very easy & cute pattern.I got this pattern for a class on sewing with knits. I made the lehmann 5-year-old granddaughter and they were so easy and adorable.1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?OliverI love this patter and have made it several times but I was unable to get the larger size now that the girls are growing. Let me know if you have the largest availableWas this helpful?Great patternSo far I have only made one playtime dress and it was easy , except that the instructions for the back closure are not as helpful as they could be and leave you to sort it out for yourself. (This is mentioned by another reviewer) I am anticipating making a lot more as my granddaughter is still only 4 months! Ordering online was excellent despite some worries on my partWas this helpful?A darling dressMy first Oliver + S pattern. The instructions were very easy to follow. I made it with knit fabric. My granddaughter loves it.Was this helpful?Playtime dressThis is my 2nd oliver & s pattern, and as with the first I absolutely loved making this dress. I find your patterns so easy to follow and they give such a neat finished garment. Lots of compliments for my daughter wearing it.Was this helpful?A winning design!I used a fine-wale, floral-print corduroy to make the Playtime dress, and with the same fabric made small covered buttons for the back closure. V, my friends' seven-year-old daughter, who's a bit exacting in her wardrobe choices, absolutely loved it, and I'm told she's received lots and lots of compliments. The Playtime dress was easy to construct (beginner here) and there were no fitting issues whatsoever (I just lengthened the dress--V likes maxi). It's hard to find a good winter dress, and this certainly fits the bill, although, of course, you could make the dress in any number of textiles. I'll probably make the Playtime again; I've got the pdf--so easy to upsize. Was this helpful?Oliver & S Playtime DressThis is the most enjoyable and well written pattern to work with. I'm absolutely in love with the playtime dress, whilst practical and simple, it has a beautiful shape and looks beautiful on. Wish there was an adult version! Was this helpful?easy patternThis was my first dress and a very easy pattern to follow. There were a few areas I did need some help, overall it turned out great for a first timer.1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?
Making of: www.DoneByAna.com1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Dress may not be for older girlsI really wanted to like this pattern. I have been sewing for my kids for several years. After making several things from "Little things to sew." I have wanted to try a dress pattern from O+S for a long time but found them too expensive. I am a Japanese so I buy pattern books whenever I visit my family back home, a much cheaper alternative. So buying this pattern was a big splurge for me.
I purchased the play time dress because my 7 year-old daughter liked the style and I did not have a similar-looking dress pattern in my stash of Japanese pattern books. Instruction was very clear and easy to follow. I loved how all the notches match perfectly . I made it a bit complicated myself because I wanted to line the bodice, as my daughter dislikes gathered hem touching her body. Construction became a little tricky because of how the back closure was designed.
Anyway, I liked it when it was done, on a hunger. But when my daughter tried it on, not so much. It looked homemade in a very bad way, it almost looked like it belonged to an Amish girl. I cut the length off to a tunic length, and now it does not look so dated.
I don't know what went wrong, I think it was a combination of design, fabric (I used Allison Glass' ink in grapefruit), and the girl. I plan to give it another try but I will use knit next time, and stick to tunic length.
Size 7 fit well on my average sized 7 year old who usually wears 6X or 7 store-bought clothes.4 of 5 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Happy sewist!Adorable pattern, wonderful instructions. Hadn't sewn garments for some time, but wanted to make matching fabric dresses for my 5 year old granddaughter and her baby doll. Made the tunic because it is so cute with leggings. Enjoyed the sewing process, it fit her perfectly, and I was one happy sewist this Christmas! Thank you!1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Playtime Dress, Tunic and Leggings PatternLove the pattern, just wish it was a paper pattern instead of digital. I ordered a paper pattern and really love having it all in one neat package. Was this helpful?Beautiful and versatile tunic!I love this pattern - it's the first Oliver & s that I've sewn for my daughter and it's a good one. I can imagine the tunic and dress made up in a variety of fabrics so it's really versatile. Instructions were so clear and I was never left second guessing them or muddling my way through as I have done with other pattern makers.
My only criticism is the fit is quite snug. I made the 2 year old size for my 21 month old daughter and there's very little room for growth and it's a bit tricky to get her into. Will definitely size up next time.3 of 3 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Cute dress/tunic!I have only made this top once so far - my granddaughter wants to be Peg + Cat (a PBS cartoon character), and I made this tunic for her costume. Easy to make, good instructions, follows basic garment construction. I will be making more of these for her; since it has long sleeves, it will be a good 3-season top and/or dress - I can imagine it in corduroy or even flannel. The one change I had to make was the length - she is 5 yrs old, and I made size 6, but then had to shorten it at least 3". Fit nicely overall.1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Bit snug!Made 18-24 months for my daughter who's just turnt 18 months thinking she would grow into it, but it was very snug and difficult to get on and off, will have to try the next size up with a shorter skirtWas this helpful?ADORABLE!I made the 12 month size for my 9 month old daughter, I cringed when I heard thread popping when I sandwiched her into it. It was adorably snug, but I'm a little scared to put her into this top again. It was tough to take off... I do think I'm going to try the next size up next time. I thought the directions were very easy to follow and was pleased to learn a few new techniques! Was this helpful?Perfect playdress!A great little ensemble and easy to make. Perfect for nursery outfits. Pockets in anything are a must for my little one, so thanks for including those! Was this helpful?Clear, intelligent directionsI've made four dresses so far and these patterns are a joy to work with. Interesting details and sensible instructions. I just wish I could find the lovely fabrics to use. Our local fabric store closed some years ago and so many of the quilting cottons available in the chain stores are high maintenance. Dress fabrics and knits are really limited.2 of 2 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Perfect leggings! So far I've only made the leggings from this pattern but they are perfect. My daughter is tall so I used the size 10 but cut them size 12 in length. I made them 1/2 black, 1/2 red for her Halloween costume. She absolutely loves them.2 of 2 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?love it!I purchased this pattern in both size runs, since it looks like the perfect basic play dress. I have sewn probably 6 or 7 of these with matching leggings. I've only made it in knits. I have not yet made it with pockets, as I am rather stingy with fabric and pockets don't seem essential to me. The leggings are especially easy to make and they fit well over my little girl's cloth diaper butt. I think the leggings make excellent pajama bottoms as well, and I have made them as shorts too. This dress is quite wide, in my opinion.2 of 2 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful? After SchoolI made the size 18 month and ut seemed to be true to size. Easy to follow directions. I did not make leggings yet.Was this helpful?Easter dressI made this with a rabbit print skirt and grey top. I made 3T size for my granddaughter who is just 2 and 2 months. It's not going to last long so will make it next time in 4T size. She loves it.1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Sew CuteI've made this tunic in two different fabrics for my four year old granddaughter to wear with leggings. The pattern was easy to follow and sew; and she LOVES the hidden pockets. The topstitch detail was the icing on the cake.1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful? My new favorite!Absolutely love the playtime tunic and leggings! I have made the tunic once and the leggings at least 5 times! They are my favorite! I love the whole outfit. I can't wait to sew it again. Oliver and S have become my favorite children's pattern company. Was this helpful?Excellent InstructionsI really loved the quality of the instructions and the finishing on the garment. A lot of care to provide high quality construction and I appreciate this. I made this for my granddaughter and have been sewing for over 60 years so I have experience, but I would not hesitate to recommend this pattern to a new sewer because it would shown them good techniques rather than short cuts.2 of 2 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Love it!Like any other Oliver+s pattern, the directions are great. I purchased this pattern because I have a granddaughter who loves those playtime dresses made by a Scandinavian designer. This pattern is very similar has made it easy for me to expand her wardrobe with dresses she loves. Have not tried the leggings yet, but again, the pattern looks very clearly written.2 of 2 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful? My go to leggings patternI haven't made this in the larger size yet as I just bought this as my daughter is about to move up to the bigger size. However I have made the size 4 about six times. She wears these every day for nursery. They are very quick to sew and she loves choosing the different print fabric.2 of 2 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?Playtime dress and leggingsLoved the dress pattern and it fit my six month old great granddaughter nicely. The leggings, however, were way too skinny to cover cloth diapers and a diaper cover. I made a second pair combining the 2 T size for the top of the leggings with a six - 12 mo size length and it worked. Love your simple styles and have made two dresses using this pattern.3 of 3 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful?easygreat pattern and easy to make1 of 1 customers found this helpful. Was this helpful? -
Errata
- In the first printing of the paper version of this pattern, there was an error in pattern piece 2 in the small size range only. (This error has been corrected in the digital version available now.) The piece as printed is too wide. To fix it, follow the diagram below or print out a revised pattern piece as provided.
Determining Which Printing You Have
As errata are discovered, they are marked for correction in subsequent printings of the pattern. To determine which printing of an instruction sheet or pattern sheet you have, look at the copyright box which appears on each. Toward the bottom of the box, there is a series of numbers.
The lowest number you see there indicates which printing you have. For example, if the lowest number in the box on the instruction sheet is "2," you have an instruction sheet from the second printing. Any errors in the instructions mentioned for the first printing have been corrected in your version. If the lowest number in the box on the pattern sheet is "1," you have a copy of the pattern sheet from the first printing.
Pattern sheets and instructions sheets can be printed separately, so be sure to check the errata notices for pattern pieces against the printing number on the pattern sheet and errata notices for instructions against the printing number on the instruction sheet.
