Lacks length measurements for the elastic
Reviewed by Knitbunnie ( Verified Buyer) on 01/08/2023
Cute pants pattern, but even after asking in the O and S Facebook group, I got no real answer as to how long the pants elastic should be. Not everyone has the wearer at the ready to try on the pants. My grandson is 2000 miles away, and even if I have a waist measurement, because of the way the pants are constructed, it’s not helpful. Also, it’s an older pattern, so there are no layers. For the price, I’d have expected that the pattern would have been updated to include layers.

Another great Oliver and S Pattern
Reviewed by Sarah Lowry on 08/05/2020
I have only made the pants so far. They are a great pattern and a true workhorse for kid sewing. They look great. I have already cut out my next pair. My only complaint is that because the pattern is split in sizes I am going to have to buy the next size up in a year or so because I know I will need it as my kid grows.

I had been looking for a pattern for pants and a waistcoat for my 2 boys to wear to a wedding and someone recommended this pattern to me. It was my first Oliver+S pattern and it will definitely not be my last! The instructions were clear, the pattern was easy to put together and all the seams matched up beautifully! I couldn't be happier with the finished product - we have had many compliments on their outfits! Thank you for a great pattern!

      Great pattern!
Reviewed by Emily M. ( Verified Buyer) on 09/04/2017
I made both the trousers and the vest for a friend's new baby—the trousers in Cone Mills denim and the vest in contrasting quilting cotton. The instructions were really easy to follow and the garments turned out beautifully. The instructions for the welt pockets are particularly great! The paper pattern assembly from the PDF pattern aren't standard, so it took me a little while to figure out how to put the puzzle pieces together. It seems to me that it's supposed to save paper but I'm not sure if it actually does.

The pattern was easy to follow with directions that were clear and concise. I did not attempt the welt pockets, but will the next time I make them. I look forward to trying some of your other patterns!

I put together a fun chocolate brown pant and vest set for my 12 year old son (read not easy to find size in patterns) and the fit was perfect. Following Liesl's directions on the welt pockets was so detailed and they came out perfect. The one suggestion I would have is the line up of vest buttons was a wee bit tricky as the front has the slight curve so that took some time to get it quite right.

I put off making this terrific pattern because I had not constructed welt pockets before. My grandson is now a size 4, so I hurried to make the pants before he outgrew the pattern. I should not have worried. The pants went together beautifully and the instructions were clear and concise on the pockets. I love the outcome and will be making some more soon.

Snappy set for the little gent
Reviewed by Masha ( Verified Buyer) on 08/29/2015
This is one of my most-sewn O+S patterns (second only to Playtime). I love vests on men and boys alike and this one has great details. The welts go together easily. The pants are also a great choice for church or dressy with their back darts, slanted front and back welt pockets. The pants feature a very generous inseam, which is great for growth. I always turn up a 2"+ hem and then am able to let it down later.

My only issue with the pattern is that the vest runs very short, as you can see in the pattern photos. I have sewn it five times and have always had to lengthen it at least a full inch. I don't mind doing it, since the pattern overall is excellent.

      Great pattern for beginners
Reviewed by Amanda Weiberg ( Verified Buyer) on 06/11/2015
I bought this pattern to make a little suit for my 2 year old for a wedding using micro herringbone wool tweed.
I would rate my sewing experience level at 'advanced beginner', but I have never sewn a garment before.
Both peices turned out really well! I was worried about the welt pockets, but the instructions are very well written and break down the process into clear steps.
The only error in the pattern I can see is the step where the front pockets are sewn into the pants; I believe the picture shows the pattern piece incorrectly, but the instructions are correct (although I could be mistaken).
This is an excellent pattern, and I would recommend it highly.

Firstly, I have only sewn the trousers and not the vest. The pattern was easy to follow until I got to the trouser band. I had a little trouble in following which layer did what. Apart from that I was very pleased with how the trousers turned out. I even got complements for them from someone who asked where I had bought them from.

Art Museum Vest and Trousers Pattern
Reviewed by Ann Kapala on 03/05/2015
When I bought my first pattern, the Fairy Tale Dress, from Oliver and S a couple of years ago I little imagined I had discovered a versatile source of sewing ideas. I am particular about my creations, about versatility, about so many things too numerous to list here. In short, I have been quite satisfied with the many patterns I have purchased; the Art Museum Vest and Trousers is a perfect example. As I sew for six grandsons and six granddaughters, versatility is important. As soon as I realized the usefulness of the pattern, I purchased it in all sizes. That way I can accomodate my smallest grandson who is 19 months as well as the oldest who is eight and everyone in between. It allows for dressy trousers or pants for play. For dressy pants I simply simply follow the pattern whereas if I sew play pants I leave out detail such as the welt pockets and belt loops. I can adapt the vest for boys or girls. The pants easily adapt to a variety of fabric including courderoy, poplin, broadcloth and others. The elastic waist band allows for my thinner as well as stockier boys; the fit on both is great. Definitely all of these reason and more make this pattern one I use frequently. With so many to sew for I appreciate a pattern I can use in so many ways. It's super to be able to have both a pants pattern I can depend upon as a staple and a vest which brings a a flair and a unique aspect for creative sewing.

  • Errata

In the first printing of the paper version of this pattern, there was a minor error on page 4 of the instructions. The second to last sentence of Step 1 under Make the Belt Loops should read, "Cut the two finished belt loops into six 3 1/2" pieces," instead of five pieces. This error has been corrected in the digital version of the pattern that is available now.

    Determining Which Printing You Have

As errata are discovered, they are marked for correction in subsequent printings of the pattern. To determine which printing of an instruction sheet or pattern sheet you have, look at the copyright box which appears on each. Toward the bottom of the box, there is a series of numbers.

The lowest number you see there indicates which printing you have. For example, if the lowest number in the box on the instruction sheet is "2," you have an instruction sheet from the second printing. Any errors in the instructions mentioned for the first printing have been corrected in your version. If the lowest number in the box on the pattern sheet is "1," you have a copy of the pattern sheet from the first printing.

Pattern sheets and instructions sheets can be printed separately, so be sure to check the errata notices for pattern pieces against the printing number on the pattern sheet and errata notices for instructions against the printing number on the instruction sheet.
