What can you do with our Cyprus Woven Polo? Well, it probably won’t surprise you to know that I have thoughts about this. And photos. And I’m happy to share them.
Here’s my introduction to the Cyrus Woven Polo pattern if you didn’t catch it. Let’s go!
As I mentioned in my introduction, this sewing pattern is designed to be just the right amount of everything to make a great-looking and great-fitting woven polo. The collar, the shoulders and the sleeves are not too relaxed and not too fitted. A simple polo placket, small vents at the sides, with a longer hem at the back for slightly more coverage, and both long sleeves with a minimalist cuff as well as short sleeves that are neither too long nor too short. And then there’s that optional chest pocket, neither too big nor too small.
I suggest that you use light- to medium-weight woven fabrics like cotton shirting, lawn, flannel, or broadcloth as well as linen, rayon, or double gauze. Lightweight knits like cotton jersey will also be appropriate. Here are two lightweight, not too drapey fabrics that would work great: linen and organza.
Polos are traditionally made from knit fabrics, and you can absolutely use knits for this style as well. Maybe you want to combine a knit body with a woven collar and placket, a la the rugby shirt? It can absolutely be done.
I love these stripes for the pattern.
Look for striped fabrics, or make your own stripes by color blocking the front and back of this style, which would be an easy way to customize the pattern and allow you to choose your own colors and stripe width. Isn’t the contrast collar and placket, below right, a great addition?
Rugged fabrics will work well with this style. Choose lightweight denim, chambray, or canvas for a similar look to these photos.
Or choose dressier, more delicate fabrics like linen, cotton shirtings, and lightweight knits for a similar look to these photos. I like the length on this style because it’s short enough to be left untucked, but it’s also long enough that you can gently tuck it in a bit if you prefer.
