how i wear it: ali’s santa rosa top

Today we have another post from our How I Wear It series. We love how new stitcher Ali is styling her Santa Rosa Top! This top is perfect for summer. Take it away, Ali!

When I saw the Santa Rosa top/dress pattern, I instantly gravitated toward it, specifically the top view. It looked stylish yet easy to wear. I knew it could be something I would wear over and over again. With that in mind, I wanted to choose a fabric that had a somewhat casual look and would fit into my day-to-day wardrobe. I also wanted something light and airy for the fast-approaching hot and humid Kentucky summer. On a recent trip to New York City, I picked up this very lightweight cotton voile fabric at Mood Fabrics and knew it would make a beautiful Santa Rosa top.

Before getting started, I was not very confident in my ability to pull this pattern off. I only started sewing my own clothes last August, when I took my first class with Lyndsey at Made Stitch Co. I have made several garments since then, but I still wondered if I’d be able to make this pattern well enough that I’d want to wear it, as I am still a beginner. As it turns out, the instructions are written so well that I was able to construct most of it with ease. When I reached the collar, however, I got stuck and ended up getting assistance from Lyndsey. She showed me how to do the step I was stuck on, and my collar came out beautifully.

I’m wearing my Santa Rosa top with black skinny jeans and some simple canvas sneakers. I think the black jeans really allow this shirt to shine! This summer, I’ll also be wearing it with shorts and maybe a pencil skirt if I can find time to add that project to my ever-growing sewing to-do list.
