saturday at the New York Public Library

Everyone had a great time on Saturday. And so many of you attended! Thank you, everyone who came. It’s always lots of fun to meet other crafters and to get to know you. Many of you had cameras, too, so I’m hoping to see some photos of the event.

Heather showed us the most amazing illustrated books of field flowers and fish (as well as a mermaid!), and Denyse shared some old quilt books and contemporary art as inspiration. I was happy to display those fashion plates I showed you on Friday, along with some materials that have been inspiring me for some soon-to-be-announced projects.

I told you we had a beautiful room? I neglected to ask anyone to take photos, so these pictures were taken by S on our way out.

Thank you to to our friend and librarian Jessica Pigza, to Crafternoon author and organizer Maura Madden, to the staff of the library, and to Heather, who organized the event. And you must see Heather’s skirt, made specially for the occasion using images from the library’s digital collection. She also includes instructions for making it using a modified pattern from her book, so visit her blog for details.

so wishing I lived closer to NYC and could have attended!

just wanted to share that I've been a fan of your blog for about a year and a half, and eagerly look forward to each new season to see what new patterns you release. in fact, it was your blog that inspired me to get a better machine and learn how to sew. so imagine my great surprise – and delight! – when this past weekend I was paging through the latest "Spark" issue, and came across your article! I had no idea that you were a Calvin alum, and in fact, graduated only two years ahead of me! When I excitedly called my husband over to show him the article and the picture of your family, he said he recognized your husband from some classes. So happy and excited to see such great talent emerge from our little liberal arts college – and now I have even a greater interest/fondness for Oliver and S!

  5. Thanks for writing, Lucinda. Our copy of the magazine just arrived this afternoon–I always look forward to seeing it and what other alumni are doing. So glad we've made a connection. Happy sewing!

  6. What a lovely picture – you all look stunning!

  7. Liesl, I would love to know the titles of the childrens books you shared at the library. Thank you!

  10. Ok, let’s see: I remember talking about Robert McCloskey’s books. It’s the the vintage feel of the illustrations (as well as the terrific stories) that always get me. Also, those little dresses with cardigans… I also mentioned A Very Young Dancer, by Jill Krementz, which inspired some little walnut boat Christmas ornaments everyone could make after the presentation:

Other books that have inspired me include the original illustrations from the Beverly Cleary Ramona books (again with the cardigans and printed dresses), and so many other books it’s impossible to list them all. But I sometimes review or show children’s books on my personal blog if you’re looking for other ideas:

    Cheers!
