fall 2009 pattern preview

It’s finally time to take the wraps off what we’ve been working on in the studio for the last several months and give you a preview of our new fall patterns.

This season we’re releasing a cute little shirtwaist dress and a jacket that can be made up in several different ways—as a lightweight fall jacket, as a raincoat, or as a winter coat that comes complete with a removable quilted lining. Both patterns have been designed to be very versatile, and both include many different options.

The Jump Rope Dress pattern is a shirtwaist dress featuring a rounded collar and front placket detail. The pattern includes two styles. The short sleeve style (shown above) features a folded cuff with sleeve tab, slightly dropped waist, gathered skirt, and a self-sash with belt loops. The long sleeve style features A-line shaping and bias trimmed gathered patch pockets.

The School Days Jacket & Coat pattern can handle the elements as either a hooded raincoat or a winter jacket for both boys and girls. The pattern features patch pockets and choice of duffle or button tab closure details. The pattern also comes with instructions for making an optional removable quilted lining that can be created with or without sleeves for additional warmth.

Both patterns will be released in our two size ranges: 6 months through 3T and sizes 4 through 8. They will be available on our website and at select quilt shops starting Tuesday, September 8.

Over the next few weeks we’ll be posting more in-depth descriptions of both patterns, complete with photos of the variations and interesting details on each.

    Gorgeous! I love it!

  2. Congratulations. 🙂 Once again you have created the most amazing clothes. Really, really beautiful…
And it shows so much how well the patterns have been worked with. All the little details, the removable lining, the duffle tab closure. the belt on the dress, the pockets….
I just adore it all. 🙂

  3. A coat! A coat! I already have some spunky oilcloth sites bookmarked in anticipation 🙂 How great that it can be all kinds of coats.

  4. Oh wow! I love them both!

  5. These are so perfect.

  6. Please tell us what fabric, inside and out, you used for the raincoat. I've been wanting to make one for my daughter but not able to find appropriate fabric.

These new patterns are simply adorable.

  7. Amy

I want, I want, I want! Can't wait until they are available.

  8. OH, Liesl… I adore what you've done. Amazing! And, I ditto Heather – where did you get the dotty oilcloth. I want *THAT* exact coat for SweetPea.

  9. P.S. I forgot to mention how much I like that old dress form!

  10. They're just wonderful. Can't wait to make them for my little one.

  11. They are both so great. I wish the shirtwaist dress came in my size. I know what my daughter is going to get for Christmas this year. Now if only Anna Maria's oilcloth was available again…

  12. SOOOOOO cute! Great job!

  13. These are so amazing. I cannot wait to sew all three!!!

  14. Barbara

Oh I love love love those patterns!!! Now you have me fabric shopping! What are the fabric requirements for the jacket in a 3T? Will 2 yards be enough?

(sale at fabric.com that ends in a couple of days!)

thanks so much, you do great work – please keep it up.

    Barbara

April, I think I found the oilcloth at fabric.com. It looks like Michael Miller laminated cotton and there's a chocolate and pink one I MUST have for Nora.

  16. I'll be buying that dress ASAP. oh that dress!! You get me every time.

  17. Oh, these are adorable! This 30 year old is sure wishing that the raincoat fit adults–it's just perfect!

  18. I am so excited and I love both of them equally. Already thinking about fabric options . . .

  19. Fantastic patterns. I've got two little girls who need both. And I sooo want that shirt dress for me, too.

  20. The patterns are fabulous, just fabulous. Can you tell us about the difficulty level of each? How many scissors will they rate?

  21. sewsalot

Can't wait to try each of these patterns. My little missy miss is going to love them.

  22. Hooray! The new patterns look great – can't wait to give them a try!

  23. These are darling! I was wondering about the skill level required??

Amazing! Definitely need to make time for these!!

  25. Oh, these are so lovely!! I'm so excited to make both patterns for my daughter. Just yesterday I was looking for a raincoat pattern for her and I couldn't find anything that was quite right, and here you've made the perfect pattern.

Add me to the chorus of voices asking for yardage requirements – I'd like to buy the aqua dots before fabric.com sells out!!

These patterns are really beautiful, Liesl. You've really outdone yourself.

  26. Oh my gosh!! I love them both! Can't wait to make them for my kids and my shop!

  27. Can't wait to make them!

  28. Oh wow. I can't wait to make these. Your patterns are so beautiful!

  29. Hi everyone,

I'll try to answer all your questions in upcoming blog posts, including all the yardage requirements, etc. Stay tuned–details to come shortly. And I'm glad you like the new designs so much! Thanks for all your wonderful comments.

    Cheers,
    Liesl

YAY!!! I love them! Bless you Liesl and everyone else, I can't wait to make it all!

BTW–have you ever considered making Adult clothing?

  31. I am literally crying tears of joy. I didn't know how you were going to come up with fabulous designs again, but you've really outdone yourself! The dress is adorable, but the coat, oh, the coat. I will be dreaming of it until September for sure!

  32. Jacket is cute! but sorry, the dress is exactly the same as school uniforms over here.

  33. This is definitely a much-awaited thing on my calendar. Perfect for my twins – boy & girl; saves me from having to make 2 patterns. A quick question – will I be able to adapt this using diff. fabric rather than just oilcloth? I may have a hard time find this material in China..

  34. Oh my – I want a dress just like that for me!!

  35. A.D.O.R.A.B.L.E.! I can't wait to make them for my girls! I have only been sewing since May and it is because of your patterns – I just had to learn! Thanks for the lovely designs.

  36. They're both fantastic, but I am dying over the coat! Your release date is the only reason to look forward to September, as far as I'm concerned!

  37. Everyone,

For those of you who are interested in doing some fabric shopping before the patterns are released, I've just posted back pattern images (including yardage requirements) in the discussion forums.

    Cheers,

    Liesl

  38. oh they are so cute! can't wait to try them!

  39. I love a shirt dress. This is just gorgeous. And I love it in the black and white gingham.

  40. Nicole

WOW, WOW, WOW, I want to make them right now! The coat and dress are beautiful. Thanks Liesel.

  41. This is exactly what I have been looking for!!! My daughter is 7 and these new patterns will be perfect. She is a dress girl 100%. She has a summer dress similar to your new dress and we both love it!!!
    THANK-YOU, THANK-YOU!!!!!!!

  42. Liesl, you're amazing! I love love love these!!!! And I can't wait until Sept 8 to pick up the pattern from Purl

  43. Liesl – Are the pants in the middle outfit included also? I'm always searching for cute little boy patterns, and you always come through!

FYI on oilcloth – I saw some really cute Marrimekko prints here: http://store.txtlart.com/oilcloth.html

  44. Laura,

The pants in the middle outfit are actually from our Sandbox pants pattern which you can view here:

I love the new patterns! They would both be cute not just for my 8y/o but my 11y/o would also wear them since they are so tailored. I would love to see these sized for older kids.

The shirtwaister is my dream dress for my daughter. Just a fantastic mix of vintage /modern styling. I especially like the way the collar sits. The big pattern companies are so frumpy by comparison. I was all set to rush to Liberty in the morning to browse fabrics when I checked pattern details and saw that the pattern only goes up to 8. I don't have the skills to resize for my 10 year old so will have to live knowing that the PERFECT dress has passed me by..
Anyway keep up the amazing, inspiring designs. Really lovely.
