It&#8217;s simple and versatile, which is just what I look for because I love to use my patterns over and over again.<\/p>\n<p>You can see my first version\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/alittlegray.blogspot.com\/2013\/09\/oliver-s-playtime-dress.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, which also has the facings on the outside. On that one, I cut the front facing to look like a faux peter pan collar, but on this one I kept the pattern as is and I love the result just as much.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/playtimefacingcollarT.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-52940\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/playtimefacingcollarT-580x870.jpg\" alt=\"Oliver + S Playtime Tunic with facings as collar\" width=\"580\" height=\"870\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-52940\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/playtimefacingcollarT-580x870.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/playtimefacingcollarT-183x275.jpg 183w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/playtimefacingcollarT-768x1152.jpg 768w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/playtimefacingcollarT.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On this Christmas version, I also left the sleeves off and instead bound the openings in bias tape. \u00a0I love the way the bodice without sleeves makes a really cute cap sleeve shape. \u00a0Finally, I cut the hem to tunic length and added pom-pom trim.<\/p>\n<p>Today, I&#8217;m going to focus on the facing modification and show you how it&#8217;s done!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1909.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9323\" alt=\"customizing facings on the playtime tunic\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1909-580x382.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1909-580x382.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1909-275x181.jpg 275w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1909.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cut out 2 of the front facings and 4 of the back facings. I skipped the interfacing since we are adding another layer of fabric, but I did fuse a thin strip on just two of the back pieces where buttons and holes go.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1912.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9324\" alt=\"customizing facings on the playtime tunic\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1912-580x395.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"395\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1912-580x395.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1912-275x187.jpg 275w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1912.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pattern piece on top shows how I cut it to make the Peter Pan look. If you do that, just curve at the bottom, but keep a straight edge to cut on the fold, about 1.5.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1913.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9325\" alt=\"customizing facings on the playtime tunic\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1913-580x389.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1913-580x389.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1913-275x184.jpg 275w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1913.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sew the front pieces to the back pieces at the shoulders as instructed. Then open them and lay them on top of each other right sides together. Pin and sew around the outside curve with a .25&#8243; seam allowance. \u00a0Then clip around the curve, turn right side out and press well. Roll the seam slightly to one side as you press. Take your time making the front nice and even since it will show on the dress. Set aside.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1917.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9326\" alt=\"customizing facings on the playtime tunic\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1917-580x386.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1917-580x386.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1917-275x183.jpg 275w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1917.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now sew the bodice pieces right sides together at the shoulders. But leave 1&#8243; un-stitched on either side of the neck opening. \u00a0(This is so that these seam allowances won&#8217;t be seen peeking out under the facing &#8220;collar.&#8221; You may recognize this trick if you&#8217;ve made the <a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/product\/OLV-OS025CP.html\" target=\"_blank\">Class Picnic Shorts<\/a>!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1918.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9327\" alt=\"customizing facings on the playtime tunic\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1918-580x371.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1918-580x371.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1918-275x176.jpg 275w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1918.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After you press open and finish the portion of the seam allowances sewn in the previous step, turn it right side out and sew those 1&#8243; portions with the wrong sides together. This part will later be completely hidden under the facings on the outside, no need to finish them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1921.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9328\" alt=\"customizing facings on the playtime tunic\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1921-580x385.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"385\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1921-580x385.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1921-275x182.jpg 275w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1921.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Open the bodice and place wrong side up. Pin the right side of your facing piece (the side that you want to show) to the wrong side of the bodice, lining up all three raw edges and pinning around the neck.<\/p>\n<p>(I did have a little bit of extra white hanging over the inside edges on the back, but I just trimmed them to match the bodice. I&#8217;m not sure if this would be different if I had used a .5&#8243; seam allowance to sew the 2 facing layers together, but trimming the extra off at this step worked fine for me!)<\/p>\n<p>Sew all the way around the inside with a .5&#8243; seam allowance.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1922.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-9329\" alt=\"customizing facings on the playtime tunic\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1922-580x386.jpg\" width=\"580\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1922-580x386.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1922-275x183.jpg 275w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2013\/12\/IMG_1922.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Understitch the seam allowance to the main bodice, going as far around the curve as you can.
