It’s always so much fun to introduce our newest releases to you. And this season is no exception. We have two new patterns this fall, and I’m thrilled with both of them. I hope you will be, too!<\/p>\n

Here’s the first, the Condesa Quilted Vest pattern<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Condesa Quilted Vest has oversized shoulders and a slightly oversized silhouette, a little boxy and cropped to keep it feeling free and current. I’ll tell you about the shape and inspiration another day, but for now let’s get into the details.<\/p>\n

The pattern pieces themselves are very simple, and the vest is easy to assemble. If you\u2019re confident, you can tackle the welt pockets in View A, which have a really professional-looking result that keeps the streamlined look of the vest. If you\u2019re a little more hesitant or want to add an additional design element to your vest that you can embellish or add a contrast color, choose the View B patch pockets. They\u2019re much easier and faster to sew.<\/p>\n

The front placket can include buttons or snaps if you like, but it can also be left without. I probably won’t ever actually button mine, which is why I left the patchwork version without buttons.<\/p>\n

I’ve included little vents at the side seams, which I think add some additional style to the sleek shape. And the vest has a band collar to finish it off and update it a bit.<\/p>\n

But let’s look at some of the details while I tell you more about this style.<\/p>\n

This vest is designed with very clean lines, which for me meant no binding along the edges. The instructions are written so that you finish the edges while you’re sewing it, and then it gets quilted afterwards. That allows you to focus your energies on the quilting itself without the fiddly binding. (After all, isn’t binding it afterwards the tedious part? Or is that just me?)<\/p>\n

There\u2019s so many different directions you can take this. Add pattern through patchwork, add texture with the quilting, do a combination of the two, or select a patterned fabric and let the fabric itself be the message. I\u2019ll have lots of inspiration to show you in a few days.<\/p>\n

If you want to use binding because you\u2019re using a pre-quilted fabric, you can absolutely do that. We’ll explain how later.<\/p>\n

This is a very simple silhouette, very easy to sew. There aren\u2019t very many pieces, so that way you can focus all of your energy on any patchwork, piecing, and quilting that you want to do. I hope you have so much fun with this style!<\/p>\n

See how much texture you can get just from quilting on solid fabric? I added the contrast topstitching at the end, just for the fun of it.<\/p>\n

I like the side vents. They add a little detail that’s very easy to sew, especially without the binding.<\/p>\n

Here are the welt pockets for View A.<\/p>\n

And you can bind the inside if you really<\/em> love to bind things!<\/p>\n

For my View B patch pocket version, I used a mix of quilting cotton, chambray, and tropical wool, and I bet you can’t tell which is which! (The tropical wool is the dark blue.)<\/p>\n

In terms of fabrics, I recommend lightweight fabrics that won’t add a lot of bulk or stiffness. Quilting cottons are fine, as are lightweight linen, lawn or voile, tropical wool, or even a viscose if you aren’t afraid of the slippery aspect. I’ll talk more about fabrics in another post, so stay tuned. Plus you’ll need a small amount of lightweight quilt batting.<\/p>\n

I had so much fun sewing these vests, and I’m pretty sure you will, too, whether you are a quilter or not.<\/p>\n

The Condesa Quilted Vest is available in printed paper version<\/a> and in digital format<\/a>.
