As part of our Fabric Source series<\/a> I’m so pleased to introduce you to Bolt & Spool<\/a>, located in Cleveland, Ohio! Here is Nan, the owner, to tell you a little about her lovely shop, which is available both in-person and online and also offers workshops and classes, and to show you some of her fabric suggestions. S and I dropped the store by last year when I took her to college, not so far away, and I can attest that it is lovely, with an excellent and interesting collection of fabrics and much more!<\/p>\n

Bolt & Spool<\/a> is a fabric boutique located in Cleveland’s bustling University Circle\/Little Italy neighborhood – adjacent to Case Western Reserve University and the cultural hub of the city: the Cleveland Museum of Art, botanical gardens, historical society, natural history museum; the Museum of Contemporary Art; Cleveland Institute of Art; Cleveland Institute of Music; and Severance Hall, home of the Cleveland Orchestra. Because of our proximity to these institutions as well as University Hospitals and The Cleveland Clinic, we get to share our wares with so many out of town visitors!<\/p>\n

\"Nan,<\/a><\/p>\n

Since opening our doors in 2010, we have been happily located on an old brick road in a big old brick schoolhouse called Murray Hill Galleries that also houses local artists studios, a yoga studio, architects, and a few other small businesses.<\/p>\n

Bolt & Spool specializes in a curated collection of fashion fabrics including: various weights of wool; Liberty Fabrics lawn, poplin and silk; oxford, poplin and pique shirtings; European linen; ponte, bamboo and cotton knits; denim and twill; interesting woven cottons from India; and Japanese oxford canvas; among others. We like to focus our inventory on natural and eco-friendly fabrics.\u00a0To complement the needs of fashion sewists\/sewsters\/seamstresses\/tailors (!!), we have a wide variety of sewing patterns, interfacing, tracing paper, a variety of measuring tools, notions, scissors, irons, thread, and buttons and zippers.\u00a0Hand stitching has always\u00a0been a love of mine. As such, we carry DMC cotton and wool floss, hand sewing needles, needlework inspiration, instruction books and kits for embroidery, sashiko, kogin, cross stitch and mending.<\/p>\n

What fabric would Nan suggest for some of our patterns? Here are a few of her choices:<\/p>\n

The Havana Pajamas<\/a> need<\/em> to be made from one of our Liberty silk<\/a>! How incredibly luxurious and\u00a0classic! I chose this rich blue Woodstock <\/a>print.<\/p>\n

Next, to keep in the spirit of lounging…I chose the Neighborhood Sweatshirt<\/a> to be sewn from our ever-so-soft knitted organic cotton velour<\/a> in this delicious yellow color. What’s fun with this is you can use one side of the fabric for the body and the other side for the shoulder accents. We also have sporty zippers <\/a>and complementary ribbing for the cuffs<\/a>!<\/p>\n

Our stunning jungle<\/a> brocade or richesse floral<\/a> brocade from the same textile house that supplies Chanel would be perfect for the Yanaka Jacket<\/a>. You will want to line it though -as the metal threads are a bit scratchy next to the skin.<\/p>\n

We paired the jacket with Liesl’s Breezy Blouse<\/a> shell top in Ecovero Satin Rayon in Bering Sea blue<\/a>. Gorgeous!<\/p>\n

I couldn’t decide which would be my favorite to make Liesl’s new Copenhagen Dress<\/a>: a classic true navy lightweight pima cotton poplin<\/a>, European laundered linen<\/a> in a soft mauvey-pink\u00a0called calamine, or a soft chambray from Tilda’s World <\/a>woven with a mustard warp and a white weft.<\/p>\n

And to get us all through the rest of winter, why not make the Classic Shirt<\/a> out of a soft, drapey, and warm featherwale cord<\/a> in this perfect rich shade of olive.<\/p>\n
