She sewed the main costume from four different patterns, with a bonus piece made using a fifth. Can you guess which patterns she used?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Name:<\/strong> MC Blackburn<br \/>\n<strong>Country:<\/strong> USA<br \/>\n<strong>Where can we find you on the internet?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/mc_sews\/\">Instagram<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Project details<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My 10-year-old son was recently part of a theater project adapted from a children&#8217;s book called Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins. His director sent me this image from the original book as inspiration for his costume. Thanks to my stash of Oliver + S patterns, it was easy to pull off the look for my young thespian.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-1-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-76641 size-large\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-1-2-760x760.jpg\" alt=\"Costume sewing using Oliver + S patterns.\" width=\"760\" height=\"760\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-1-2-760x760.jpg 760w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-1-2-500x500.jpg 500w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-1-2-150x150.jpg 150w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-1-2-768x768.jpg 768w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-1-2-1200x649.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Patterns used:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shirt:<\/strong> I used the <a href=\"https:\/\/oliverands.com\/shop\/digital-apple-picking-dress-sewing-pattern.html\">Apple-Picking Dress<\/a> sewing pattern for the sleeves and the basic shape of the shirt and the <a href=\"https:\/\/oliverands.com\/shop\/digital-sketchbook-shirt-shorts-sewing-pattern.html\">Sketchbook Shirt<\/a>\u00a0pattern for the neck and collar. I adjusted my pattern pieces on my thrifted shirt to preserve the button placket and the sleeve plackets but recut everything else. I moved the center back over on the fold so I could add some gathers to the center back before attaching my collar and also added some fullness to the sleeves because I knew I wanted them to be gathered with elastic and easy to get on and off.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-76643 size-large\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-3-760x1014.jpg\" alt=\"Costume sewing using Oliver + S patterns.\" width=\"760\" height=\"1014\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-3-760x1014.jpg 760w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-3-500x667.jpg 500w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-3-768x1025.jpg 768w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-3-1151x1536.jpg 1151w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-3-1200x649.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Pants:<\/strong> I made the <a href=\"https:\/\/oliverands.com\/shop\/digital-sailboat-top-skirt-pants-sewing-pattern.html\">Sailboat Pants<\/a> almost exactly from the pattern. I left off the leg vents, lengthened the legs a bit and put in a super-deep hem that I then tacked up for cuffs. I also added a couple more buttons.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Vest:<\/strong> I used the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?client=internal-element-cse&amp;cx=013982605092625837443:lhmgrar7zuo&amp;q=https:\/\/oliverands.com\/shop\/digital-art-museum-vest-trousers-sewing-pattern.html&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjwgcz67_TuAhWyMlkFHYUeBNkQFjAAegQIAxAB&amp;usg=AOvVaw3E2zLQiTEzTJkXp7YAFxxx\">Art Museum<\/a> pattern for the vest. I did draw the front so it had a bit more coverage and would be seen under a coat. I also added a whole lot more buttons to be more period appropriate and left off the belt.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Jacket:<\/strong> The jacket pattern wasn&#8217;t an Oliver + S pattern, but I think the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?client=internal-element-cse&amp;cx=013982605092625837443:lhmgrar7zuo&amp;q=https:\/\/oliverands.com\/shop\/digital-secret-agent-trench-coat-sewing-pattern.html&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwj0z9iL8PTuAhXSElkFHaIkCSsQFjAAegQIAhAB&amp;usg=AOvVaw3HZUSxvAB-oeygDhiVYur6\">Secret Agent Trench Coat<\/a> could help achieve a similar result.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fabrics used:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shirt:<\/strong> A thrifted linen shirt<br \/>\n<strong>Pants:<\/strong> Thrifted wool pants<br \/>\n<strong>Vest:<\/strong> Baby cord outer and cotton shirting for the lining<br \/>\n<strong>Jacket:<\/strong> A thrifted sport coat<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-76642 size-large\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-2-760x1013.jpg\" alt=\"Costume sewing using Oliver + S patterns.\" width=\"760\" height=\"1013\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-2-760x1013.jpg 760w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-2-500x667.jpg 500w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-2-768x1024.jpg 768w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-2-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Kenna-2-1200x649.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 760px) 100vw, 760px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Did the fabrics work well?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe fabrics all worked well. My son found the pants to be a little itchy so we added leggings instead of knee socks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did the sewing go?<\/strong><br \/>\nOliver + S patterns make a project like this so approachable! It&#8217;s so nice not to have to &#8220;wing it,&#8221; and to know that things will fit because the sizing is so consistent and the drafting so dependable. All of the patterns I used are ones I&#8217;ve made multiple times over the years. I added a little bit of ease to each piece, knowing they will most likely get worn again on stage.
