Some people question their effectiveness and others say that a fabric mask is better than no mask. It&#8217;s worth noting here that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/hcp\/ppe-strategy\/face-masks.html#crisis-capacity\">Centers for Disease Control<\/a> have gone on record to say that homemade masks can be used as a last resort. But for those who may have masks at home and who are also able to stay home, we have a suggestion. Why not sew masks for yourself and donate the stash you have to health workers? Some hospitals are also requesting fabric masks. Before sewing, check with your local hospital to see whether they are asking for mask donations. And if they don&#8217;t have a preferred pattern, you can choose one from the links below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/smartairfilters.com\/en\/blog\/best-materials-make-diy-face-mask-virus\/\">This article from SmartAirFilters.com<\/a> has really useful graphics showing the results of a study by University of Cambridge researchers, to determine the effectiveness of various substrates in face masks.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/tjmccue\/2020\/03\/20\/calling-all-people-who-sew-and-make-you-can-help-solve-2020-n95-type-mask-shortage\/?subId3=xid%3Afr1584864501866fbi&amp;fbclid=IwAR2vruDGMFBJYLlgCBRpNIJnp4282ZgLA7JVJx-rYHFmea4p87aeots2S1A#44bd73434e41\">This article from Forbes<\/a>\u00a0discusses efforts in the sewing community to make face masks and has links to some patterns.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instructables.com\/id\/AB-Mask-for-a-Nurse-by-a-Nurse\/?fbclid=IwAR2mUMBnd6OZK_Y8pscM0Q-f0CDY1DZ1n29ZIWAUfyvG0C7Scj1dS2nCtlU\">This pattern<\/a>\u00a0made by a nurse is designed to stand alone or be worn over an N95 respirator. The author notes that this pattern is for use as a last resort, and doesn&#8217;t replace medical-grade masks. She also provides some information about conflicting information published in peer-reviewed medical journals, about the efficacy of homemade masks.<\/li>\n<li>JOANN Fabrics has posted several tutorials for face mask sewing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.joann.com\/make-to-give-response\/?icn=hpzhero&amp;ici=make-to-give-response&amp;fbclid=IwAR1GUgMpxJzD0Bh5XLBPlnjvQ07fB8oUUIMkOqqOiErw1SkurKaVvXPsE94\">this page<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There&#8217;s some good news, too. Providence, which had started an appeal called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.providence.org\/lp\/100m-masks\">100 Million Mask Challenge<\/a>\u00a0for their providers in\u00a0Washington state, is now saying that local manufacturers have heard their call and will begin to produce medical-grade masks and face shields for them. They have left up the links to their patterns for masks and shields for other healthcare providers who might need them.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re so grateful to all the people working to keep us healthy and to save lives right now! And if a mask can help someone, all the better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pinterest Picks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t been on Pinterest much lately, so just a couple of images for you. Does the photo below, left, remind you of our <a href=\"https:\/\/oliverands.com\/shop\/afternoon-tea-blouse-sewing-pattern.html\">Afternoon Tea Blouse<\/a> like it reminds me? Also, I&#8217;m fascinated that the blouse on the right includes four different printed fabrics, three of which are the same print in different colorways.
