For some, flowers are blooming,\u00a0but\u00a0a large portion of the US and Canada\u00a0are currently buried in snow! \u00a0If you&#8217;re still in winter (or heading into it &#8211; I&#8217;m not forgetting you Aussies!) and your family&#8217;s poor worn mittens have turned into\u00a0orphans, today is a day to be happy you can sew! \u00a0The creative and talented\u00a0Jane from <a href=\"http:\/\/buzzmills.typepad.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Buzzmills<\/a>\u00a0is here with a\u00a0tutorial to make brand new cozy mittens with materials in your upcycle pile&#8211;truly the perfect snowed-in project.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The calendar may say that spring is only a month away, but for many, frigid temps and snow are still quite prevalent! \u00a0We are some of those folks. \u00a0Both of my kids were in desperate need of some new mittens to keep the cold and wind out and their hands nice and toasty warm, so a couple of weeks ago I sewed them each up a pair of <a href=\"http:\/\/buzzmills.typepad.com\/blog\/2015\/02\/kcw-winter-five-upcycled-mittens.html\" target=\"_blank\">new mittens<\/a>\u00a0using the\u00a0Mittens pattern from\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/books\/OLV-OS026LIT.html\" target=\"_blank\">Little Things To Sew<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/mittensTITLE.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-43037 size-large\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/mittensTITLE-580x384.jpg\" alt=\"little things to sew upcycled sweater mitten tutorial\" width=\"580\" height=\"384\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/mittensTITLE-580x384.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/mittensTITLE-275x182.jpg 275w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/mittensTITLE.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While I love this pattern, I made\u00a0a few changes to make them suit our needs a little bit better.<\/p>\n<p>These mittens were made using upcycled sweaters and are lined with fleece. \u00a0They have an added cuff made from cotton ribbing. \u00a0I love the little changes and so did Kristin and Liesl, so they asked if I would share how I made them here.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43126\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo1-580x361.jpg\" alt=\"little things to sew upcycled sweater mitten tutorial\" width=\"580\" height=\"361\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo1-580x361.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo1-275x171.jpg 275w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The mittens I made initially (pictured above), were just\u00a0partially lined with fleece, only on the top part. \u00a0Since the undersides of the mittens were made with a thick felted wool sweater, I worried that lining the mittens would make them too bulky and difficult to grasp with. If you are using a more lightweight sweater, I would recommend underlining all pieces with fleece as I did in the tutorial to follow.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Begin by cutting out all three of the pattern pieces twice &#8211; once using your sweater and once out of fleece.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43123\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo2-580x387.jpg\" alt=\"little things to sew upcycled sweater mitten tutorial\" width=\"580\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo2-580x387.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo2-275x183.jpg 275w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo2.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I used micro fleece to underline my mittens. \u00a0It has a good deal of stretch to it, and it&#8217;s thin, but warm. \u00a0Cut pieces with the greatest amount of stretch going across the hand.<\/p>\n<p>Once your fleece and sweater pieces have been cut, match the fleece (lining) pieces to each sweater (outer) pieces with wrong sides together and baste with a 1\/8&#8243; seam. \u00a0Once your lining has been basted to your outer pieces, sew together per instructions skipping the part with the elastic and ribbon.<\/p>\n<p>To finish the mittens, fold a piece of cotton ribbing (with good stretch recovery) and\u00a0cut it on the fold to be \u00a04&#8243; tall by the width of the mitten bottom.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43124\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo3-580x580.jpg\" alt=\"little things to sew upcycled sweater mitten tutorial\" width=\"580\" height=\"580\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo3-580x580.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo3-150x150.jpg 150w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo3-275x275.jpg 275w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo3.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Fold ribbing right sides together and sew the short sides together with 5\/8&#8243; seam. \u00a0Next fold the cuff in half widthwise with right sides facing out,\u00a0place the cuff over the end of the mitten so that all\u00a0of the raw edges are even, match and pin\u00a0the cuff seam with one the mitten seam and the center of the cuff (fold) at the other mitten seam.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-43122\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo4-580x387.jpg\" alt=\"little things to sew upcycled sweater mitten tutorial\" width=\"580\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo4-580x387.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo4-275x183.jpg 275w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2015\/02\/photo4.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sew the cuff onto the mitten with a 1\/4&#8243;
