I\u2019m sure I did it the \u201cwrong way\u201d. Well, I went one step worse with these flares as there is no outside leg seam, and by adding flare to the sides of the pattern pieces all the flare ends up in the inner leg. The star stamp painting was pretty cool though, hey?<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to quick costume pants there was only one pattern to consider. It\u2019s <a title=\"my favorite oliver + s pattern: shelley from lightning mcstitch\" href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/2014\/03\/my-favorite-oliver-s-pattern-shelley-from-lightning-mcstitch.html\">my favourite<\/a>, the Nature Walk Pullover and Pants pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a rundown of what I did. If you\u2019re old enough to remember flares, or you\u2019re a couture sewist, or even a couture sewist who is old enough remember flares and to have sewn flares, then please feel free to add your comments and let me know how else it could be done.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pattern-piece.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11429\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pattern-piece-533x800.jpg\" alt=\"Customizing the Oliver + S Nature Walk Pants\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pattern-piece-533x800.jpg 533w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pattern-piece-183x275.jpg 183w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/pattern-piece.jpg 1067w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Start with the Nature Walk pants pattern piece drafted in the right size. I sized down slightly and added length because I knew I wanted a tight backside fit!<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, add a bit of width to each side at the hem line. Remember all this width will end up in the inner leg, so don\u2019t go too crazy here. Now draw a line joining the widened hem point to the side leg just about where the notch is.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/adding-width-at-hem.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11430\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/adding-width-at-hem-533x800.jpg\" alt=\"Customizing the Oliver + S Nature Walk Pants\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/adding-width-at-hem-533x800.jpg 533w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/adding-width-at-hem-183x275.jpg 183w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/adding-width-at-hem.jpg 1067w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To try and get a bit of flare in the outer leg I cut and spread the pattern.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/split-pattern.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11431\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/split-pattern-533x800.jpg\" alt=\"Customizing the Oliver + S Nature Walk Pants\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/split-pattern-533x800.jpg 533w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/split-pattern-183x275.jpg 183w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/split-pattern.jpg 1067w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alternately, if you split the pattern vertically from top to bottom and sewed a side seam you could easily add more flare to the outer leg.<\/p>\n<p>Did I say I was being a bit lazy and slapdash with this? Well I was. I didn\u2019t redraw the pattern but slashed the pattern piece and then spread it directly onto the fabric.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/spread-and-pin.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11432\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/spread-and-pin-533x800.jpg\" alt=\"Customizing the Oliver + S Nature Walk Pants\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/spread-and-pin-533x800.jpg 533w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/spread-and-pin-183x275.jpg 183w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/spread-and-pin.jpg 1067w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In this way I created a small pleat of fabric in the outer lower leg. (Please note: these pictures show a woven fabric. The pattern is designed for stretch knit fabrics, I just used this fabric as it was to hand and the colour looked better for pictures!)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/creating-an-outer-leg-flare.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11433\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/creating-an-outer-leg-flare-580x386.jpg\" alt=\"Customizing the Oliver + S Nature Walk Pants\" width=\"580\" height=\"386\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/creating-an-outer-leg-flare-580x386.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/creating-an-outer-leg-flare-275x183.jpg 275w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/creating-an-outer-leg-flare.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can slash and spread just the once or multiple times. While this method gives the width all around it does create a weird, twisting effect which is really lovely for cowl neck tops but probably not what you want for flared trousers.<\/p>\n<p>Now to the fun part, painting! I used some craft foam but I imagine you could use a kitchen sponge, or an eraser, or a wine cork, or a potato\u2026 almost anything can be cut into a stamp.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/cut-foam-stamps.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-11434\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/cut-foam-stamps-533x800.jpg\" alt=\"Cutting out stamps from foam\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/cut-foam-stamps-533x800.jpg 533w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/cut-foam-stamps-183x275.jpg 183w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/06\/cut-foam-stamps.jpg 1067w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Dress ups get used a lot at our house and do need to go through the wash sometimes so I used a fabric paint. I applied the paint to the sponge stamp with a brush then stamped the fabric.
