But sleeves are different.\u00a0 The technique for adding piping or trim to necklines and bodices doesn&#8217;t work for sleeves because they are usually hemmed rather than finished with bindings, facings, or linings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/title-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-10975 size-large\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/title-1-533x800.jpg\" alt=\"how to add piping to a sleeve\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/title-1-533x800.jpg 533w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/title-1-183x275.jpg 183w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/title-1.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When I wanted to add piping to the sleeves of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stitched-together.com\/2014\/04\/oliver-s-hide-and-seek-dress.html\" target=\"_blank\">this\u00a0dress<\/a>, I Googled how to do it. \u00a0 There wasn&#8217;t a lot out there, so I created my own technique.\u00a0 It was easy and came together beautifully.\u00a0 I thought I&#8217;d share how I did it here, in case you were looking, too. \u00a0This tutorial works not only for the <a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/product\/OLV-OS045HS.html\" target=\"_blank\">Hide-And-Seek<\/a> but for any dress or top, and works to add trim as well as piping.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13566285044_6019b751ee_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10964\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13566285044_6019b751ee_o-533x800.jpg\" alt=\"piped sleeve tutorial\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13566285044_6019b751ee_o-533x800.jpg 533w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13566285044_6019b751ee_o-183x275.jpg 183w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13566285044_6019b751ee_o.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tutorial<br \/>\n<\/strong>1.\u00a0 In order to avoid the trim showing on the inside of the sleeve, you&#8217;ll need to either create a hem facing for the sleeve or line it.\u00a0 I chose to line the sleeve with a lightweight fabric which matched my main fabric.<\/p>\n<p>Simply cut 2 sleeves in your main fabric and 2 in your lining fabric using your sleeve pattern piece.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13883706616_0b4a8c64b0_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10966\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13883706616_0b4a8c64b0_o-580x725.jpg\" alt=\"piped sleeve tutorial\" width=\"580\" height=\"725\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13883706616_0b4a8c64b0_o-580x725.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13883706616_0b4a8c64b0_o-219x275.jpg 219w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13883706616_0b4a8c64b0_o.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 Next you will baste your piping onto your main fabric, aligning the raw edges.\u00a0 But first let&#8217;s talk about seam allowances for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a piping tip: Anytime I sew piping onto anything, I trim the seam allowance of the piping to match the seam allowance of the pattern.\u00a0\u00a0 For example, if I&#8217;m using a pattern with a 3\/8&#8243; seam allowance, I will trim the seam allowance of my piping to 3\/8&#8243;.\u00a0 That way I can line up the raw edges of the fabric with the piping, making it a breeze to sew on, while still being precise. In this case, the sleeve was finished with a 5\/8&#8243; narrow hem, which matched the seam allowance of my piping exactly.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13883715986_ea673e3570_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10967\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13883715986_ea673e3570_o-580x725.jpg\" alt=\"piped sleeve tutorial\" width=\"580\" height=\"725\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13883715986_ea673e3570_o-580x725.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13883715986_ea673e3570_o-219x275.jpg 219w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13883715986_ea673e3570_o.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 After you&#8217;ve sewn on the piping, fold your sleeve in half, right sides together, and sew the side seam.\u00a0 Doing this will enclose the raw edges of your piping.\u00a0 Then you can trim the piping (and seam allowance, if you wish) to reduce bulk.\u00a0 Repeat with the sleeve lining.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13906884203_2fe2b329da_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10972\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13906884203_2fe2b329da_o-580x464.jpg\" alt=\"piped sleeve tutorial\" width=\"580\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13906884203_2fe2b329da_o-580x464.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13906884203_2fe2b329da_o-275x220.jpg 275w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13906884203_2fe2b329da_o.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 Turn your main sleeve fabric wrong side out, and place your sleeve lining inside it so the right sides are together.\u00a0 Match the seams and notches (if applicable).\u00a0 Then sew the sleeve to the lining along the sleeve edge, sewing as close to the piping cording as you can.\u00a0 I like to use a zipper foot for this step, but if you don&#8217;t have one, it can be done with a regular foot.\u00a0 Just be sure that you sew very close to the cording of your piping.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/oliverands.com\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13906890853_a03766013b_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10973\" src=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/blog\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13906890853_a03766013b_o-580x464.jpg\" alt=\"piped sleeve tutorial\" width=\"580\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"\/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13906890853_a03766013b_o-580x464.jpg 580w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13906890853_a03766013b_o-275x220.jpg 275w, \/\/o.osimg.net\/community\/content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/13906890853_a03766013b_o.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0 Turn the sleeve right side out and check to be sure you sewed close enough to the piping cording.\u00a0 Sometimes I have to go back and get a little bit closer to the cording in certain spots.\u00a0 When it looks good to you, you can trim the seam allowance to 1\/4&#8243;
