Around this neck of the woods..teen girls show straps and most moms don’t, so I guess it depends on the target for this pattern? I prefer shirts that I don’t have to find/wear a “special bra” with. But if it had a built in that would make the difference. 🙂
7 years ago LINKvioletvata @violetvataI have two boys and one husband who have outgrown Oliver and S (ha!) I make mostly casual items, like sweatshirts, swim gear, and sleepwear for them. I also do dress shirts because I hate the options in stores. I’d love to see men’s pattern that start at the top of the boy sizing, as in, they have sizes like XXS and XS, because it is impossible to find patterns or clothes for older boys who aren’t quite men sized yet, especially if they need significant modifications to fit (extra slim). Hope this helps 🙂
9 years ago LINKvioletvata @violetvataThank you! I had seen that one and was leaning towards it! I’ll put it on the birthday list, thanks ladies.
9 years ago LINKvioletvata @violetvataHello folks! Wondering if anyone has recommendations of an online class (or other) for teaching measuring and fit. My dream is to have someone knowledgeable measure me and tell me my fit issues but a 4 day fit class for multiple hundreds of dollars is not in the budget. I make almost all my own clothes, but I still feel like it is very touch and go, with whether I get a good fit on fitted items. Thanks for your thoughts…
9 years ago LINKvioletvata @violetvataI agree with all of the above. Mine were all very wakeful, taking till age 3 or so to sleep thru. And we tried everything! My youngest still wakes once a night (he’s seven) and I will take him to the bathroom and he will climb in with us. He is terrified of ghosts and I believe he can see something from what he says. He won’t even put his feet on the floor at night without me. Similarly, he won’t go into other rooms of the house without me now that it gets dark so early in the evening. The reason I allow it and am comfortable with it, is because you see so clearly that he is scared, and he won’t go in to that room, etc even if he REALLY wants to hurry to do something fun (wash up so he can see his show, etc), he will still wait patiently for me to come so he can wash up, etc. My trick is to always watch if the “little problem” goes away when there is something in it for them 🙂 If the “problem” is still there even when they really want to head out for fun, see a friend, etc, I treat it as valid and try to accommodate it. What Nicole said about making sure she realizes how much it affects you and making sure she sees that her actions impact on her own fun is a great way to start checking that! I am trained as a naturopathic physician and chewable melatonin is a safe thing for kids to take before bed occasionally. It helps them fall asleep and stay asleep a bit longer. Please consult with your pediatrician before using it with your child and for dosing, and please treat it as you would any drug and store it safely. Much safer than ambien and all that though!
9 years ago LINKvioletvata @violetvataMy old machine did start doing that and it was due to the metal parts being worn down. Hoping that is not the problem with yours, but I’m thinking that a zig zag on woven would also not work, so you could show him how that is impaired and maybe he will see the problem? For me it was every stitch the required a left right/side to side movement, not just a forwards motion. Keep us posted!
10 years ago LINKvioletvata @violetvataThank you so much! I did some online searching but because I am located here, it only provided North American links!! Blessings!
10 years ago LINKvioletvata @violetvataPerhaps option 1 or 2 for fabrics that can be used for garments and then have scrap bags for quilters? Maybe sorted by color/ theme/ gender? I also LOVE the idea of having coordinates together ( if you need a contrast fabric for the collar, etc, that is sold along with the main piece)….
10 years ago LINKvioletvata @violetvataI have mostly knits in my “collection”, which is vast! and I have to recommend Nature’s fabrics as having “bend-over-backwards” for you customer service, she will work to find what you need (she has a rare assortment of wool for those who love natural fibers and euro knits without the outrageous international shipping!) and Jeanne is a lovely woman. Fabric Fairy has great choices and amazing service (special cutting 1/2 yards of boardshort fabric for me to match my rash guard fabrics and hand matching colors for me on multiple occasions). I love Chez Ami when they have a sale and you know you need a lot of something (plain colors for leggings and tees) since you have to buy 2 yards and the fabric is WIDE! Ottobre’s etsy shop is where I get ribbing and knits for a “special treat”!
10 years ago LINKvioletvata @violetvataFor USA- I like the sew classics ribbing at Joann fabrics, it is a cotton lycra blend and has nice deep ribs like the ones you see on RTW sweatshirts, it has always behaved nicely for me, I do preshrink it twice. Lots of basic colors and it does coordinate with their interlock knits.
For online- OTTOBRE has a lovely etsy shop that always has ribbing in stripes and solids in two weights, a 1 by 1 rib which is lighter (jersey tshirt necklines) and a 2 by 2 rib which is more like (deep ribs) for sweatshirts or holding up boys shorts (waist- like boden) , they are also a blend and are AMAZING- best ribbing ever and you can order by partial meter- as in this color 20 cm, this color 40cm, etc, up to one meter, to get a nice variety!). It is listed as “rainbow ribbings” or as stripes
10 years ago LINKvioletvata @violetvataSandbox larger sizes- long and lean, good fit around bum and waist
Sailboat- Good fit smaller sizes (but are low ride in the back), larger sizes seem way too wide and spacious in the crotch and thigh, I can fold out many inches and make them work, especially on the back leg pattern piece.
Field trip- larger sizes- fit well size 10, good coverage over bum and good waist.
For pants for my boys, who are all slim but not similar in build otherwise pants need to look okay drawn in with elastic and then let out again for the next kid, since oldest is super slim. Most oliver and S pants have had a good fit this way, they tend to be fitted and not be too boxy so they don’t look hilarious on a slim kid without doing structural alterations, which i avoid since they are handed down.
10 years ago LINKvioletvata @violetvataI second the Ottobre notion, I’ve subscribed for years and it is the best stuff (aside from Oliver + s) for boys out there, the sizes go up to euro size 170 cm, for example, my oldest is in size 12 US, wears a 146 Euro, and the sizes go up every 6cm, such as 152, 158, 164, 170…so we still have a ways to go before he outgrows it. Chino shorts pattern in this summer’s issue (Issue 3/2013- # refers to season) for older boys and a great one for girls from last years. you can look at the whole mag one their website http://www.ottobredesign.com/
and clicking on one of the little magazines, inside there you can look through each page (it is tiny but you can get the feel) or click on the link for the pdf so you can see which style comes in which size range (the range for each item varies, but typically it is either baby, toddler or school age sizing). There is also a “In english” button to look for if the finnish on the website stumps you! The magazines come in english, so no worries! They also have an etsy shop that is much easier to navigate but does not have ALLLLL the back issues like their regular site does. My photostream in flickr has tons of ottobre for older boys in it. 10 years ago LINKvioletvata @violetvataAlso, I don’t know how everyone feels about this, but when I sew for me,and invest time and energy into fitting and using good materials, I expect it to last for YEARS (maybe like 5-10), unlike with the kids clothes, so I really want it to be timeless. You are a master of this, Liesl, so I have no worries, but just putting it out there. Simple, timeless, easy to embellish basics is exactly what I am looking for 🙂
10 years ago LINKvioletvata @violetvataI am looking for an easy to sew/easy to wear shirt pattern and would LOVE a lisette or Liesl version. I would like something that is made of woven but has few or no closures/fussy bits. I am perfectly capable of sewing fussy bits but don’t love wearing the for everyday/at home shirts . For example, something like the continental blouse, with bust shaping, sweet details, etc but short sleeves (or options). being able to make something tunic length is also a great plus as I feel skinny jeans look weird with shorter tops, just me….I love my market blouse but as I mostly stay home, it’s too dressy for everyday. i want a top like a glorified fitted t shirt but made from woven, that you can wear to the playground after school and not look like you dressed up to be there but still look put together. Fitted but not formfitting, options for necklines, sleeve length and top hem length would be great. Once I’ve fitted a pattern to myself I like to be able to make it many times without it looking like I did! If anyone knows of any patterns like this, please let me know! Also, a sleeveless/tank top version with no billows, pleats, gathers, etc that make mommy tummies look huge is very high on my list, still looking though! I have yards and yards of voile I’m “collecting” for these perfect tops I’m dreaming up but no patterns in Lisette or in five years of Ottobre Woman that are appropriate!
11 years ago LINKvioletvata @violetvataI looked it up, tied the bow in about 5 minutes and sent the link to the momma of the little girl I sewed for! Perfectly perfect!
