I got this model a bit over a year ago as a replacement for my mother inlaw’s old machine. I’d never had a computerized machine before, but I wanted to be able to sew automatic button holes, so I upgraded to the 4120QDC.
I think I got mine on special for $699 so that sounds like an even better buy (might help to convince your hubby)!
In general I’m really happy with the machine:
– it handles multiple layers of thick fabric very easily(e.g. hemming jeans)
– Finishing on button holes is very good apart from when dealing with multiple layers of thick fabric (when I should probably do a bound or hand stitched button hole!)
– I purchased the walking foot to go with the machine as I found that it was a complete necessity for knits and quilting.
– I like the electronic stitch selection although I probably only use 3-4 of the stitches regularly.
– Up/down needle finishing position is great for pivoting at corners (I think it comes pre-programed as up but it’s easy to change to down)
– Variable max speed (in addition to pedal control) is great for speeding up along long straight seams (slider at max + foot flat to the floor) and then backing off for the fiddly bits.
The only thing I don’t like is the annoying tone of the beeping sound it makes when you try to sew with the presser foot up or press a wrong button!
As it’s my first computerized machine I don’t have anything to compare it with but I’m still happy with it one year on. Sorry for the long ramble! If you have a specific question I haven’t answered let me know!
cheers,
Sarah
10 years ago LINKSarah_G @Sarah_GThanks Nicole, I had no idea this thread existed, great move to make it a sticky!
I’m a geology post grad student from Melbourne, Australia. I mainly sew Oliver and S for my nieces and friends’ kids (although I do a lot of non O and S sewing for myself and my husband). I spend a lot of time outdoors so a lot of the stuff I sew is designed to save me from having to buy too much expensive gear that doesn’t really fit at hiking stores.

11 years ago LINKSarah_G @Sarah_GIf you have any of the Cape Ann fabric with the tiny clothes on it you might be able to get a sneak peak at the tunic too. It looks like it may have just a single ruffle to reduce length. I too am intrigued to see if this is a knit or woven as I’m looking for another easy on and off top like the hopscotch.

As Island Nana said on Flicker – The skirt back is cut as two pieces so just put those down on the bottom right next to your bodice front and move the back bodice up to the top right next to the skirt front and you won’t have to compromise on skirt fullness. (Hope that makes sense – let me know if it doesn’t and I’ll post a diagram). You might then be able to fit the sleeves to the right of the collar.
Gorgeous fabric – will make a lovely fairytale dress!
11 years ago LINKSarah_G @Sarah_GIt’s definitely worth laying out the pattern pieces.
I managed to get a 3T fairytale (no sleeves) out of 1 meter of Sateen (sorry not sure what width – I’ve only got scraps left). I lined the skirt and bodice with another lighter weight cotton.
I also agree with meleliza – you could save fabric by reducing the depth of the hem.
11 years ago LINKSarah_G @Sarah_GThanks Heidi – glad to hear it’s not a stupid idea, you are right the final dimensions seem way to large for my small frame! I think I’ll give it a go with a muslin from the kids pattern.
11 years ago LINKSarah_G @Sarah_GGorgeous pattern! Speaking of sizing, does the adult version have any extra ease around the bust? I’m a petite 30 inch hip and normally take in most patterns but here it looks like the size 12 with careful length adjustment might be a better starting point? Or am I just being a cheapskate wanting to start from the cheaper pattern!
11 years ago LINKSarah_G @Sarah_GSpotlight Bayswater(VIC) had about 10 rolls at $8 a meter, all marked as overstock, so check the discount table as they are the same patterns as the rolls on the full price shelf!
12 years ago LINKSarah_G @Sarah_GLove the new look!
Are there any plans to allow us to change the colour of the items of clothing when mixing and matching the separates on the play paper dolls? That would be an awesome additional feature to try out the pairing of different skirts/tops/pants.
12 years ago LINKSarah_G @Sarah_GI normally trim the top of the pocket to 1/4″ after attaching the binding with the 1/2″ seam. This step (not listed on the pattern) makes it much easier to fold the binding all the way over. Hope this helps.
