Thank you all for your helpful links and suggestions. I ordered the vintage butterick style, since the bodice most closely resembles the one in the dress. I can make the other modifications (definitely losing the pointy waist!) but was unsure how to create that wrap-around piece. I guess I know what the “generation gap” is now…………..when styles you wore as a teenager are now the styles that * your * kids now want to have! LOL
9 years ago LINKJenniferP @JenniferPI have the fabric, I have the pattern, I have traced the pattern after measuring my daughter. She is measuring a size 6. However, when comparing the back piece, the edge of the shoulder is about 3/4 in from her shoulder! I am wary that the shoulder seam will be too tight for her. When I compare one of her close-fitting t-shirts to the pattern, it measures to the size 12 so I am confused (and I don’t think she is broad shouldered)…
Has anyone else had an issue with the shoulders on this pattern or am I missing something?
9 years ago LINKJenniferP @JenniferPI use the safety pin method with a jumbo safety pin and have a few tricks to add:
1. Cut a curve in the elastic on the end that is going through first so the edges don’t get caught.
2. Draw an arrow on both ends of the elastic, so when I am at the end the arrows should point in the same direction!
This has worked for 30+ Lazy Days skirts.
9 years ago LINKJenniferP @JenniferPI can vouch for the dryer sheets, I was surprised at the gunk that came off my iron. I would put the sheet on the edge of the ironing board and push hard on the iron dragging it along the edge of the ironing board. Ask a friend who uses them to give you a couple, I’ve done that for one of my friends whose husband is allergic to the sheets. Oh, and I have used new dryer sheets as well. The only difference (I think) is that some of the oily stuff on the sheet gets transferred to the iron, so I would just iron a press cloth or other random scrap to get it off. Good luck!
10 years ago LINKJenniferP @JenniferPMynorth and Robin: I picked up 2 of Simplicity pattern 1477 for $1 each at my local Hobby Lobby. They are size 3-8, and I will mail them to you if you send me your mailing address. Email me at potter_jennifer at yahoo.com
10 years ago LINKJenniferP @JenniferPThank you for your advice, ladies. I did want to use silk for this dress, but she fell in love with a button taffeta dress online and I cannot find that type of taffeta in silk, hence the polyester. At that point, she was insisting on having a store-bought dress, so I was happy to be able to make one for her, even if it’s out of polyester!
I will be careful in my choice of lining fabrics, and may go with the silk (funny, the lining may cost more than the dress!).
10 years ago LINKJenniferP @JenniferPOh, sorry to not provide all the pertinent info! The masks are made out of felt, a double layer stuck together with wonder under. I have LTTS, I will check the Bento Box handle info, thanks Lightning!
10 years ago LINKJenniferP @JenniferPMy daughters (7.75 and 6 yrs) don’t have a choice in whether or not to wear bloomers under skirts and dresses, they are required in our house. I think it’s best to have 2 layers of fabric between that area and the outside world 🙂
10 years ago LINKJenniferP @JenniferPThank you so much, Sarvi, for your reply, it was great and very helpful to me! I think I’ll start with a Kaufman lawn and go from there.

10 years ago LINKJenniferP @JenniferPOkay ladies, I am new to all the different fabric designers and qualities. So far what my local Hobby Lobby or JoAnns has stocked has been ok, and not very expensive. Sooo, I have to wonder what is so wonderful about this Liberty Tana lawn fabric I have read about. Does it sew itself? 😉 I keep thinking I should just order some, but at $20/yd (on clearance, no less!!) I can’t quite seem to get to the checkout.
Can anyone help me understand what is the difference between this (and other high end fabrics) and the regular cottons at my LQS or JoAnns and Hobby Lobby?
Thanks!
10 years ago LINKJenniferP @JenniferPHow about a Lazy Days skirt? Or a dress-up crown (draw a template, fuse front fabric to felt back, topstitch around front and attach 1/2 in. elastic (about 7 in for kids) to go around head, decorate front of crown (cut circle from felt used for backing and put jewel or initial in it). These have gone over well with my 5 and 7 year olds.
10 years ago LINKJenniferP @JenniferPNot your daughter’s jeans have a slimming panel in them that sucks in your tummy. You can find similar pants with this feature at Kohl’s as well (docker’s brand?). My problem is my legs are a 35″ inseam, so I have a hard time finding pants that are long enough. The pricier brands seem to be more generous in that regard. I love Banana Republic for pants, they are always long enough and I have scored some fabulous clearance finds ($12 cords last year!).
10 years ago LINKJenniferP @JenniferPI highly recommend Kut from the Kloth jeans, they have had some very nice trouser jeans that fit a woman’s body. This year though, all I saw from them were skinny jeans, and found a very nice pair of jeans (again, trouser style) from Jag. Both brands have styles that are more mid-rise. Both brands you can find at Nordstrom’s (gulp). What I do is use our credit card and order maybe 6-7 pairs (free shipping!) to try on and return all but one or two. The pants can be pricey, but sometimes you can catch a sale. A lot of people swear by Not Your Daughter’s Jeans (very pricey, I think) but they don’t fit me well. And if you are ever near a Nordstrom’s, you should go get a bra fitting, especially if you are post-nursing. The right bra really makes a difference in how your clothes look! I will be posting some pics of my favorite (almost worn-out) skirt, a simple A-line from Banana Republic that I have had for several years.
11 years ago LINKJenniferP @JenniferPWhat a great idea! I live in Colorado Springs, and I happen to know that you’ll be in Colorado for the Makerie Retreat in April, Liesl 🙂 I can’t make the retreat but would be happy to host a get together in Colorado Springs (about 2 hrs south of Boulder) or would drive to a venue in Denver or Boulder. We are coming to Brooklyn over spring break (the last week in March) so any get together during that week I could attend!
