I must say this is the first time I have bought the entire collection in one fell swoop (along with my entire sewing budget for the month)! I purchased the digital Playtime for some instant gratification and got the dress done yesterday. I have a pile of knits waiting to become leggings so I’m hoping to at least get them cut today. My other patterns are “out for delivery” and with DH at the fire station for the next 24 hours I think I’ll do a late night and get them traced.
10 years ago LINKhomefire @homefireI’m bit late for 2013 plans but I’ll get in on the last half! It’s been a while since I’ve really gone shopping for my girls but this spring due to my health (a nasty respiratory virus that left me worn out and playing catch up in ALL areas of my life) and the help of some gift cards my 8yo and I went shopping for most of her summer clothes. I wasn’t thrilled with the fit and fabric quality but we were able to find some things to get her through the season. A mere 2 months later and the RTW pieces have shrunk in odd places making them fit even worse, the colors have faded terribly and seams are fraying while the few things I was able to sew are still going strong.
That said, I am committed to sewing most if not all of her fall/winter wardrobe. I’m working on putting together a SWAP that is realistic for me to get done and is mix and match to get the most use out of the fewest things. Between my experience this summer and the growing awareness of the true cost of cheap clothing I’m also going to be doing the “boring” things that in the past I have bargain hunted for. Things like leggings and layering tees, and undershirts.
Is anyone else thinking about the next season yet? I’d love to hear how you plan things out (or not).
10 years ago LINKhomefire @homefireI have used the nature walk pants in a Lycra knit for this purpose before. The key is size down a bit, especially around the legs, or they gape quite a bit and are no better than just undies. I also have a pattern for boy cut boxer briefs that gets used a lot.
10 years ago LINKhomefire @homefireMy dd is now 8 and with a few lazy days skirts under her belt (I think her first one was around 5) I bought a pattern from Simplicity that is geared for beginners and children. It goes through all the basics, explains things like selvedge, nap, ect and has two views to pick from. I always encourage her to be creative and do her own thing but I believe it is also so important to be able to read a pattern and do things correctly. We are just starting this pattern and I’m thinking a Popover will be next. If she is still interested after that I will certainly be looking into some of the books mentioned here.
11 years ago LINKhomefire @homefireI have FINALLY finished two long sleeved sketchbook shirts. The instructions were very well done but I’m afraid my execution left a little to be desired with the cuffs. I’ll for certain be making some more short sleeved shirts but until I work up my courage again I just might leave the cuffed shirts to the professionals 🙂
11 years ago LINKhomefire @homefireI also think it will look lovely and the muslin under will be just the thing.
11 years ago LINKhomefire @homefirejustsewit- Every time the seasons change I get the bug and drag out my binder with all my pattern jackets, surround myself with fabric and start labeling things. Now, I hardly ever get to everything but it’s so much fun to take stock. My DH says its like playing paper dolls for grownups:)
I have my first two Sketchbook Shirts started! Don’t know why I’ve waited so long to use this pattern!
11 years ago LINKhomefire @homefireNot exactly a sewing mistake but related….
Last weekend I was on a sewing spree getting some outfits done for my dd’s birthday and I forgot to feed the kids dinner! Friday nights are pizza and a movie night around here but with DH at the firehouse and all this sewing to do I let the kids play some video games in the late afternoon until time to start a movie and make the pizza. The was around 4pm. Fast forward 5 hrs and a little knock on my door (they new I was working on surprises) and three very hungry children later…… I keep a few frozen pizzas around for back-up so we threw one in the oven speedy quick…… I felt so bad, next time I think I’ll set an alarm:)
11 years ago LINKhomefire @homefireAs for spring clothes for littles, i lean towards jumpers because you can layer with long sleeves, then short sleeves and depending on the cut during high summer no shirt at all. The Icecream dress is also one of my favorites. It looks adorable with a long sleeved tee but is roomy enough to be nice and cool when it gets hot.
11 years ago LINKhomefire @homefireJustsewit…… I have to say you threw me for a loop! My name is Sharon as well and have been fighting a chest cold for the past two weeks that is taking its toll and leaving me exhausted. When I saw your well wishes to “Sharon” I thought, how sweet, then I it was like the Twilight Zone because my last post said nothing about being ill and I don’t think I’ve used my name…..anyway……like I said, I’m really tired 🙂
11 years ago LINKhomefire @homefireThinking about spring! We still have a few months before it really starts to get warmer but with the field trip pattern I’m going to sewing more for my son as well so I need to get started earlier.
11 years ago LINKhomefire @homefireWe’re getting a lot of rain here in my neck of the woods (or corn fields) too. January and Febuary are supposed to be all about sledding and hot cocoa but instead we trying not to sink in the mud holes!
11 years ago LINKhomefire @homefireI’m another big fan of this pattern. Between the skirt and the top/dress it is by far the work horse of my collection.
11 years ago LINKhomefire @homefireIt IS fun to go back an look, isn’t it?
Mine was the Ice Cream dress for my youngest and I think it’s still one of my favorites!
