Sticking pattern together

I'm finally getting round to making the Chai Tea (which I bought in 2017!). I cannot fully understand the sticking together instructions, despite having done this loads of times with other designers. Do I need to match the letters in the ovals, or do I just trim one side and get the grid lines to meet and there will be two ovals with an A in it?? The instructions say to join near the matching letters, and I'm used to using the letters to match sheets - which is correct?? Thanks.
